KII recently spoke to Bill S-208 and the harm caused by mandatory minimum penalties. These provisions entrench systemic racism, pressure people into wrongful guilty pleas, and prevent judges from doing their job of imposing fair and proportionate sentences.
Mandatory minimums undermine Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action 32, drive the over-incarceration of Indigenous Peoples, and create a false sense of public safety.
So-called “tough on crime” policies such as mandatory minimums promise safety, but decades of evidence show they deepen injustice without delivering anything more than political rhetoric.
Bill S-208 would give courts a vital safety valve to prevent injustice, reduce court delays, and move Canada toward evidence-based, community-centred approaches to justice.

Excellente nouvelle concernant mon projet de loi S-220, qui vise à reconnaître le mois de mars comme le Mois du patrimoine hellénique.
Hier, lors de la deuxième lecture, le sénateur Housakos s’est prononcé en faveur du projet de loi, et le Sénat a accepté de le renvoyer au Comité sénatorial permanent des affaires sociales, des sciences et de la technologie (SOCI). Je suis reconnaissant à mon collègue pour ses commentaires élogieux et pour son soutien continu qui a permis au projet de loi S-220 de franchir une nouvelle étape du processus législatif.
Bien que je sois conscient que l’ordre du jour du comité est très chargé, j’ai bon espoir que mes collègues à SOCI trouveront bientôt le temps d’étudier le projet de loi et de le renvoyer à la Chambre pour une troisième lecture.

Great news regarding my bill — Bill S-220, which seeks to recognize March as Hellenic Heritage Month.
Yesterday, during second reading, Senator Housakos spoke in strong support of the bill, and the Senate agreed to refer it to the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology (SOCI). I am grateful to my colleague for his generous remarks and for his continued advocacy in helping Bill S-220 progress through another stage of the legislative process.
While I recognize the committee’s very full agenda, I remain hopeful that my colleagues at SOCI will soon find time to study the bill and return it to the Chamber for third reading.
