DOHave you been told that your dog needs to “just get used” to stuff that worries them? Have you been made to feel foolish for advocating for your sensitive dog?
Budweis was a sensitive puppy! He was quite worried about dogs, especially big, fast-moving ones.
He’s now 2 years old: not only is he no longer concerned, but he actually has pretty nice social skills.
This is not because I let him “get used” to dog interactions: I was careful not to push him into overwhelm, and I was protective of his interactions with dogs to make sure he wasn’t getting repeatedly rushed or worried.
Not everybody agreed with my approach! Concern was expressed about me making him “worse” and “more scared”.
Taking time to build our young dogs’ confidence is not a bad thing!! This is not going to make them “worse”. What could make them worse is repeatedly putting them in situations that are scary or overwhelming.

Remember that backing up while maintaining eye contact with your dog will invite them into your space.
Instead moving forward towards them will deter the dog from jumping on you and invading your space.
“But Ian, I have a dog that’s over 100lbs and I’m 5 feet tall”
It’s not about your physical size and it’s not about waiting until the dog has jumped up on you. If your large dog is walking/trotting towards you when they get about 6 feet away and you know they are going to jump……
Take a confident step forward and say (not yell) “nope”. Use your confident energy to interrupt your dog from jumping.

✅Calm: Sensitive dogs are highly attuned to human emotions. Stay composed and communicate in a way that aligns with their instincts, not ours.
✅Appreciation: Celebrate every small step. Reward their efforts generously with treats to encourage progress.
✅Reserved: Not every dog warms up instantly. Be subtle in your approach—over-enthusiasm can overwhelm them.
✅Evaluation: Progress takes time. Continuously monitor their emotions and body language to guide your training. You don’t have to do everything in one go!
