Why history’s greatest failure is actually a masterclass in survival... 🚢❄️ Did you know? After his ship was completely crushed by Antarctic ice, Ernest Shackleton sailed a tiny lifeboat 800 miles across the most violent ocean on Earth, crossed unmapped glaciers on foot, and miraculously returned to rescue every single one of his 28 men. 🤯 Want to learn the ultimate survival and leadership secrets? Exciting news - Shackleton Greatest Story of Survival is starting on Netflix on 31st October! It was always my goal to make this film highlighting Shackleton’s leadership and its relevance to today’s issues and it was great working with directors Bobbi Hansel and Caspar Mazzotti to make this a reality. #shackleton #leadership #antarctica #climatechange

Visting Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod hut at Cape Royds this summer in Antarctica. Thanks to the great work of the @antarcticheritage, this historic building remains intact and well preserved today. From this small hut in 1908, Shackleton mounted his attempt to be the first to reach the Geographic South Pole. They didnt succeed, but reached the furtherest south at that time of 88° 23' S, just 97.5 nautical miles from the pole. 📷 @richardsidey with @eyosexpeditions #shackleton #caperoyds #nimrodexpedition #antarctica #abandonedplaces

The Ghost Your Brain Creates To Save You When you're at the edge of death, your mind can create a guardian. 🧠👤 This is called the "Third Man Syndrome"—a mysterious presence reported by explorers, climbers, and survivors in their darkest moments. Legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew felt an "extra person" guiding them to safety. Scientists believe this isn't a ghost, but your brain's ultimate survival mechanism: creating an internal "copilot" to help you endure the impossible.#ThirdManSyndrome #Psychology #Survival #Mystery #Science #Mind #Shackleton #Unexplained #Brain third man syndrome, survival psychology, Shackleton, felt presence, hallucination, brain coping mechanism, extreme survival, mind playing tricks, explorer stories, near-death experience

A lot of people have asked me what a typical journey to Shackleton‘s hut from Scott base would look like. This is the adventure from departing Scott bass to arrival at the hut and then return to Scott base. The full day was almost 9 hours. We departed Scott base just after brunch and drove two hours along the route to Cape Evans where Scott’s Terra Nova hut is. We visited this hut a few weeks ago and I have a video of this on my page if you’re interested:) From Cape Evans the route north had not yet been proven so it was up to us to make sure that the route was safe. Along the way we had to cross a number of cracks and in one case we had to use our bridging timbers because the crack was too wide for our vehicles. This was a slow journey between Cape Evans and Cape Royds. The perseverance paid off and when we finally arrived, we had proven that the route was safe. This allowed us to safely open the route for future fam trips. When we arrived at Cape Royds, the ice off the land was too bumpy and rugged for our vehicles so we had to park up and walk the rest of the way which turned out to be about a kilometre. Once we reach the land which traversed up the hill and got amazing views of Shackleton‘s hut. We then descended the hill into where the hut is. From here, I opened up the hut (I’m a hut guide) for the team to have a look around. We spent about an hour in the hut and when everybody was done we packed up our gear, closed the hut up and walked back to Hagglund vehicles. Once we got to the Haggs we started the trip back to Scott base. This was much quicker as we had already proven the route and knew that the cracks that we would have to drive over we’re safe (because we had already driven over them.) After one hour we had arrived back at Cape Evans and from there it was another two hour drive back to Scott Base. It was one of my favourite days that I have spent in Antarctica.

Sinéad Kennedy has sailed to Antarctica and South Georgia, so what is this epic voyage like? ‘This is one of the most remote places on earth. There is no airport. You reach it only by crossing the restless Southern Ocean, a sailing that takes four long days from South America,’ she writes. Read her feature on independent.ie/travel now! Why would anyone want to visit? ‘For me, there were two reasons: to see the king penguins that “own” the island, and to relive a great story that has inspired me to keep going in tough times. Ireland’s most famous explorers, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Tom Crean, famously arrived in South Georgia in a bid to save the crew of the ill-fated ship, Endurance… Shackleton is buried there.’ #Antarctica #shackleton #cruise #cruiselife

An expedition lead by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society has found the wreck of Quest, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s last ship, in the Labrador Sea. The wreck lies upright and intact at a depth of 390 metres, northwest of St. John’s and east of Battle Harbour, Labrador, in the traditional waters of Mi’kmaq, Innu and Inuit. The search was led by famed shipwreck hunter David Mearns based on extensive research by Antoine Normandin. Expedition members hailed from four countries and included oceanographers, historians, and people with close familial ties to Quest. Shackleton died aboard Quest in 1922 while en route to Antarctica, and the Norwegian-built sealing vessel went on to have a remarkable career that brought her into contact with a who’s-who of early 20th century polar exploration before she sank in the Labrador Sea on May 5, 1962. Famed British polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's last expedition ship Quest has been found at the bottom of the Atlantic off Canada's coast. The shipwreck was found in the Labrador Sea at a depth of 390 meters (1,280 feet). Shackleton went down in expeditionary legend after an epic escape he and his 27 companions made after another of his ships, Endurance, sank in icy seas off Antarctica in 1915. The explorer died aboard Quest seven years later aged 47. #AFP 🎥 Royal Canadian Geographical Society #Shackleton #antarctica #canada
