STWilliam Shakespeare (baptized April 26, 1564, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England—died April 23, 1616, Stratford-upon-Avon) was an English playwright, poet, and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon." His vast body of work includes 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and three long narrative poems. His plays, such as Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth, have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
