This basketball game had our students locked in from start to finish 🏀🔥👏 Shots from the Dots is one of our students’ favorite PE basketball games, and this year we modified it even more to help our younger students be successful too! 🙌😊 For upper grades, poly spots are spread out on both sides of the court between the baseline and the 3-point line. Students work in teams with a basketball 🏀 and a hula hoop. One player dribbles to any spot, takes a shot, and if they make it, they bring the spot back to their team. Teams can play to clear their side first or compete to collect the most spots by the end. 💪✨ For lower grades, we added a smaller hoop in the center of the court and placed hula hoops under the side baskets to give students an easier place to shoot. With 3 different hoops to choose from, students have more opportunities for success while still practicing dribbling, shooting, teamwork, and game strategy. 🙌🏀🎯 I love taking student-favorite PE games and making simple modifications so more students can participate, feel successful, and have fun. ❤️😊 #PhysEd #PEGames #BasketballInPE #ElementaryPE #PEteacher

Giving students choice during our basketball unit has been a game changer. 🏀 We offer three different basketball options so every student can find the right challenge level. Newer players can start with a playground ball that’s softer and easier to bounce. Students with some experience can use a rubber basketball that feels more like the real thing. And our third graders and up can challenge themselves with a leather basketball. ⛹️⛹️‍♀️ To keep it fair, we put our squad rows inside an old ball and randomly pick which row gets to choose their basketball first. Some students go fast, some go slow, some are still figuring it out—but everyone is working and improving. 🤍 Starting class this way helps build confidence, ball control, and gets their bodies ready for the rest of our basketball lesson. One of my favorite ways to get every student dribbling nonstop in PE. Basketball Knockout Tag 🏀 If the tagger tags your ball, you go out of bounds, or you pick the ball up with two hands, you’re out. When you’re out, take a dribble lap around the outside track and jump right back in. Great way for kids to dribble continuously at their own pace 4 Simple game. Tons of touches. I like to go ahead and incorporate some of the rules of Basketball into our practice tasks so students who haven't ever played the game will understand some of the basic rules . For this task we practice dribbling in open space throughout the gym and students are learning what it means to "Travel", "Double Dribble" or let the ball go "Out of Bounds" which all result in a turn over in a real game - so to earn our ball back, we do 5 reps of an exercise before returning to the activity . Introducing rules like this during simple tasks will make it much easier when you start playing modified games because students will have a basic understanding of Basketball Rules . More basketball teaching tips on the Blog 👍🏻 . #physed #iteachpe #peteacher #teacherlife

“Why are kids running around the gym giving 22 handshakes?” 🤝🏀 It’s called 22 Skadoo, and it’s one of our favorite games for practicing basketball dribbling in elementary PE. Everyone has a basketball and must dribble the entire time — even the taggers. A few students are “it” and use noodles to tag while chasing players around the gym. If a player gets tagged, they head to the baseline and complete 10 crossover dribbles. After finishing, they stand on the line with their hand raised until a teammate comes over to give them 22 handshakes to get back in the game. I rotate taggers every couple minutes to keep the game fresh, and you can easily change the skill on the baseline depending on what dribbling move you’re working on. Lots of movement. Lots of dribbling reps. And apparently… a lot of handshakes. 😅 Save this one for your next basketball unit! #ElementaryPE #PhysEdGames #BasketballDribbling #PETeacherLife #physed
