Ball first, ground first, draw, cut, high or low trajectories are all needed for a complete short game. This shot shown here would be a ground first, high spinning, slightly higher launch shot producing a quick stopping golf ball. One of the cool parts of this shot is how he spins the shaft to close the face. In this scenario, we’re playing to a pin 10 yards away, where the ball is above our feet and there is a downslope sever downslope to the pin… . The first You HAVE to play with a premium ball with a soft outer cover to generate maximum spin. I have done the testing - no one in the world can spin a cheap, hard ball! The second requirement is fresh grooves, meaning that relatively new wedges are needed. The grooves roll of channeling away debris and moisture is maximised, so friction increases. The firmness and speed of a green also makes a massive difference - often the spiniest wedge shots look this way as the greens are 12/13 on the stimp meter with a moderate firmness. Chipping has been a bit of a blind spot for me — so lately I’ve been revisiting the basics and taking a lot of inspiration from @dangrievegolf - using his ideas as a framework for my own practice. These are my 3 main cues: 1) Keep turning & let the body release Most bad chips happen when the body stalls and the hands try to “save it” at the bottom. If I keep rotating through, the club gets released by the pivot — the strike becomes calmer, the face stays more predictable, and I don’t need a last-second hand flip. 2) Weight + ball slightly left → shallow AoA / low point forward I’m not trying to “stab down” on chips. I want my low point in front of the ball, with pressure staying on the lead side. That setup helps me brush the ground instead of digging, and it makes contact and launch much more repeatable, almost like moving up through impact. 3) Soft hands → clip/brush the turf (don’t dig) Soft doesn’t mean weak — it means no tension and no extra hit. When my grip pressure stays light (level 4), the club can glide through impact and I’m far less likely to catch the leading edge. You might have noticed the alignment stick under my arms: I like it as a simple feedback tool for “connected” chipping — arms and torso moving as one unit. It keeps my arms from taking over and helps me coordinate the motion from the body for more predictability. Question for you: What’s your go-to chipping cue or drill for better contact?
