_J#sicklecell this is maddening. When I worked in the ER, I saw first hand how debilitating sickle cell disease is. This was a special moment that deserved a little acknowledgment. Siblings of children with disabilities are some of the most empathetic humans you’ll ever meet. Nazzy living with Sickle Cell while also being an autism sibling has added such a unique layer to her personality, & I’m really enjoying getting to know that part of her.
A few things:
1. I let Nazzy participate / support Neze as much or as little as she wants. There’s no pressure to be the “perfect sister.” If you’re an empath (or raising one) you know we sometimes struggle with knowing when to stop pouring into others & recharge themselves. With Nazzy having Sickle Cell, I have to remind her often to check in with herself before pouring into others.
2. Neze selectively talks (not a lot & not often) but he will very clearly tell you: “I want Zaxbys,” “I want Reese’s,” or “I want waffles.” 😂 That’s why I say “quote-unquote nonverbal” I do still have full delusional faith that I will hold a conversation with my son one day. I mean, I did single handedly teach him to say “I love you” 😏 -very much refused the idea of never hearing those words. ❤️
3. I’m officially normalizing my son stimming in the background. Although, I recently learned he sometimes stims while I’m talking as his way of telling me… zip it. 😩
4. This filter really sucks. But… I was already committed by the time I realized, & it was either y’all get this or nothing… so here we are! 😂
& As always: normalize the abnormal, talk about all the things that make you uncomfortable because you aren’t the only one feeling whatever it is that you feel. 🤍 #sicklecell #autism #sicklecellawareness #autismacceptance

AKSickle Cell causes Nazzy frequent pain episodes that can range from unbearable & immobilizing to muscle aches & fatigue. There are times when even a light touch makes her scream in agony & other times all she wants is to be held and massaged.
I think we need to talk more about the things that actually help, so other families find the courage to share too. We have to learn from each other!
As caregivers, we want to fix everything. We feel like we’re supposed to know everything. But there aren’t enough products or resources made with our kids in mind, so when we find something that helps, we really can’t afford to gatekeep it.
So here’s one small thing that helped us avoid a hospital visit during Nazzy’s recent Sickle Cell crisis.
We use @drteals restorative mineral epsom salt as part of her comfort routine, along with a gentle body wash and a foaming bath. Nazzy loves the vitamin C & lavender scents, but the epsom salt is her favorite because she feels like it helps the most.
(Not shown is the Dr Teals hemp body oil we also use.)
We dim the lights + use a red light during her bath. Red light has many benefits, at the very least, it helps her relax + improves her mood. -We also have an inferred sauna that can be used without high heat but Nazzy tends to prefer this method.
Every family managing a disease or disability learns their own comfort routine. This is just a small piece of ours. Sickle Cell pain comes fast, so I keep everything in one place so I can focus on her instead of scrambling.
