Retinoids + Benzoyl Peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidising agent commonly used to treat acne by reducing bacteria and inflammation. However, when used in conjunction with retinoids, it can lead to chemical degradation of the retinoid molecules. Benzoyl peroxide is known to oxidise retinoids, rendering them less effective. This can diminish the benefits of using both ingredients and potentially cause skin irritation due to increased sensitivity. The exception - formulations carefully crafted to allow both ingredients to coexist in harmony (think Epiduo and new kid on the block Cabtreo).
Vitamin C + BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids): Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps brighten the skin, boost collagen and reduce hyperpigmentation. BHAs like salicylic acid are exfoliants that penetrate deep into the pores to remove excess oil and dead skin cells. When used at the same time, their combined irritancy can overwhelm our skin’s barrier function.
Salicylic Acid + Retinoids: Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid known for its ability to exfoliate the skin’s surface and unclog pores, making it a common ingredient in acne treatments. Retinoids, on the other hand, promote cell turnover and collagen production, aiding in acne prevention and overall skin rejuvenation. Combining these two ingredients can lead to excessive dryness and irritation.
