We all begin with magic in our hearts,
Born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us.
We are born knowing how to sing to birds,
To read the clouds,
To find our destiny in grains of sand.
But slowly, the magic is educated out of us.
It is churched out, spanked out, washed away,
Combed and straightened, until we fit the narrow path.
We are told to be responsible, to act our age,
To grow up, for God’s sake.
And why? Because those who told us were afraid—
Afraid of our wildness, our boundless youth,
And because the magic we carried reminded them
Of what they had lost.
Left them ashamed and saddened by their own forgotten dreams.
