Here's 5 things to stop doing before bed for restorative sleep. 😴👇⁠ ⁠ 1️⃣ Ditch the screens! Scrolling through your phone or watching TV before bed exposes you to blue light, which tricks your brain into thinking it’s still daytime. Blue light delays your brain from producing melatonin, thus making it harder to fall asleep naturally. ⁠ ⁠ 2️⃣ Going to bed too late is another big one. Your body thrives on solid sleep schedules, and staying up past your natural sleep window can throw off your entire circadian cycle. Aim to wind down and head to bed at the same time each night—even on weekends.⁠ ⁠ 3️⃣ Late-night snacking might feel harmless, but eating after 8:30 PM can mess with your digestion and blood sugar levels, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Snacking late can also force your body to digest instead of its essential overnight repair processes, significantly disrupting your sleep quality. Eating late forces your body to store more fat since you're inactive during sleep, and over time this can lead to increased insulin resistance and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. YIKES.⁠ ⁠ 4️⃣ Sleeping with lights on—even dim ones—can confuse your brain and reduce melatonin levels. Darkness signals your body it’s time for deep rest, so turn off overhead lights, unplug bright electronics, cover your phone completely or even put it in another room altogether (I know this can be really hard to do) and use blackout curtains or a sleep mask if needed. Get that room DARK.⁠ ⁠ 5️⃣ Steer clear of caffeine or alcohol too close to bedtime. While a nightcap might make you sleepy, it actually disrupts your REM cycle. Also, alcohol suppresses melatonin production and spikes cortisol in the middle of the night. Try cutting both off in the late afternoon and stick to herbal tea or water as the night winds down.⁠
