We have germination!!!! Week one update on seed snails. I was very surprised that the plastic, the most traditional material for this method is actually having the slowest germination. I had my bets on on the wool performing well, which has been confirmed so far, but I’ve been very surprised by how well the wax has held up! And the performance of the plants in there. Follow along as we try to find more plastic for alternatives in our gardens #Plasticfree #zerowaste #gardening #seedstarting #microplastics

Not all gardens are massive, sometimes you just need a small batch of seedlings - and I’ve found an easy & reusable mini growing space to be a take out container! The deep bottom of the take out container holds seed starting soil & water! The clear lid allows light to reach the seeds for germination, and acts as a mini humidity dome to keep the soil moist. This soil blocker, a @swiftblocker fits perfectly inside for quick & efficient soil blocks! Happy seedlings & a happy gardener! 🌱🌱🌱 #farmyardblooms #gardening #gardeningtips #recyclereducereuse #seedstarting

🧭 Starting seeds doesn’t need plastic trays. Egg cartons are one of the simplest, lowest-waste ways to get things going — especially if you’re dealing with squirrels (sunflowers don’t stand a chance otherwise). Fill each cup with soil, plant your seeds, and keep them lightly misted — moist, not soggy. No sun needed until they germinate. Once they sprout, move them into light (outdoors if it’s warm enough, or under grow lights). Always check your plant’s hardiness and your zone. When they’re ready, tear off each section and plant the whole thing directly in the ground. No root disturbance, no fuss. Bonus: use half an eggshell in the cup — calcium = natural fertilizer. And yeah — plastic starter pots aren’t great. They’re often too wide, roots get crowded, and seedlings are hard to remove without damage. Simple, low waste, actually better. #fieldguide #gardeningtips #lowwasteliving #growyourownfood #fieldsolutions

For a long time, gardening knowledge has been treated like something to protect and sell back to people. Methods made to look complicated, tools made to feel necessary. But growing food was never meant to be that way. The seed snail is simple. Once you understand it, there’s nothing to buy, nothing to upgrade, nothing to keep you dependent. You use what you already have, you reuse materials, and you let the plant do what it naturally wants to do -grow. To me, hiding simple methods behind products or making them seem harder than they are doesn’t sit right. Gardening should be shared openly. It should be accessible, especially now, when so many people want to grow their own food but feel overwhelmed before they even start. Reusing plastic that already exists, giving it another life instead of sending it to landfill -that’s not a compromise. That’s a step in the right direction. It’s time to make gardening simpler again. And more honest. #gardeningtips #growyourownfood #organicgardening #upcycledgarden #seedstarting

Stop throwing away plastic bags like this. They can grow your seeds. 🌱 Grow More Seeds In Less Space I made a seed snail using plastic from a manure bag, and it works great for starting seeds in a small space. Why this method works: It saves space by stacking seedlings in a spiral It holds moisture well, which helps seeds sprout It reuses materials you already have at home Simple steps: Cut the plastic into a long strip Add soil along the strip Place seeds evenly Roll it up into a snail shape This is a simple way to grow more without buying trays or spending extra money. Save this so you can try it later Share this with someone who loves gardening Comment what you would plant in this setup 🌱 #GardeningTips, #DIYGardening, #SeedStarting, #FrugalGardening, #SmallSpaceGrowing, GardenReuse

Stop seed starting with trays and do this instead. The most unhinged way to start seeds for your garden is actually super simple: seed snails. Why it’s better than a tray for certain crops: 🌱Spacing is built in so there’s no thinning 🚫Zero plastic 🌀The unrolling process is incredibly gentle on roots 🥬Works for anything with small seeds you’d normally sow in rows: lettuce, spinach, beets I love this especially for things I’m starting indoors to move outside later. Save this for spring. 🌱 #seedstarting #plantingseeds #zerowastetips #growyourownfood #gardeninghacks

Starting tomato seedlings the simple, low-waste way 🌱 I use food containers with clear lids as mini greenhouses — they let the light in, keep the moisture stable, and help seeds sprout faster. Later, the lids become perfect drip trays. To keep each plant separate, I add toilet paper rolls inside. They gently divide the seedlings, protect the roots during transplanting, and make the whole process much easier. Reuse isn’t complicated. No one is perfect, and sometimes plastic containers still make their way into our homes — but they can easily live a second life. Less waste, smart reuse, and happy tomatoes. #TomatoSeedlings #SeedStarting #ReuseAndGrow #LowWasteLiving #GardeningTips 🌱
