The Smilodon was the most famous of the machairodont cats, prowling the Americas until the end of the Pleistocene epoch. Often mistakenly called a tiger, it was actually more robustly built than any modern lion or tiger, with powerful forelimbs designed to wrestle large megafauna to the ground. Its most striking feature was its pair of elongated canine teeth, which could reach up to 11 inches in length. These sabers were surprisingly fragile and were likely used for precise, lethal stabs to the throat of its prey once the animal was pinned down.
