Why not start a horse in a long shank bit? 🐴 asked Richard the question Can you start a horse in a shank? Yes. Cowboys did it for years. But it’s like trying to learn a new language by being dropped into a foreign country with zero help. 🌎 The B1 Philosophy: 🏫 The Snaffle: It’s the classroom. This is where we teach the "A-B-Cs" of pressure and release. It’s a direct, side-to-side conversation where the horse can learn without being overwhelmed. 🗣️ The Shank: It’s total immersion. It’s a "finished" signal. A shank bit multiplies the pressure, meaning the horse needs to already be fluent in the language to understand what you’re asking. We start in the snaffle to give the horse a fair chance to learn the mechanics. We want them to hunt for the signal in our body so we never have to rely on getting a bigger bit for control. I’ll say it again — I 100% recommend snaffle bits with browband headstalls… but understand the mechanics and make that decision for yourself. I see way too many people getting judged for riding in a different setup. At the end of the day, to each their own if you know what you’re doing, do what you want!

When the front end stops, just add forward motion. In our Snaffle Bit Basics 2 series, we don’t over-correct the "stalls." If you’re working a circle or a maneuver and your horse’s front end just quits on you don’t get frustrated and don't overthink the mechanics. The Rule: Just add forward. That’s all. Forward motion is the cure for almost every problem in horsemanship. If they stop moving their feet, they stop learning. Re-establish the "go," get that front end drifting again, and the softness will follow. Keep it simple. Keep them moving. Stop pulling. Start sitting. 🛑 In our Snaffle Bit Basics, the bit isn't a brake pedal it's a barrier to run into. The B1 Process: 🪑 The Seat: We "melt" into the saddle. 🧱 The Hands: If they don't listen, our hands become a solid wall. Don't pull back. Just be the barrier. Let the horse "run into" your hands like they hit a fence line. The moment they stop, you release. That’s how you build a horse that hunts for the "Whoa" on a loose rein. 🐎 Catch the full "Snaffle Bit Basics" series at B1Horsemanship.com 🔗 Link in the Bio

Stop saying "Whoa" too early. In our Snaffle Bit Basics, timing is everything. If you say "Whoa" while your horse is still pulling, you’re teaching them to associate that word with resistance. The Rule: We don’t use "the word" to force the stop. We use it to label the stop. 1️⃣ The Action: Ask with your seat and body. 2️⃣ The Stop: Let them find the "Geography of the Stop." 📍 3️⃣ The Word: Say "Whoa" after they have stopped. By labeling the moment of total stillness, Luna learns that "Whoa" means one thing: Relaxation. Don’t turn your verbal cues into a tug-of-war. Make them a reward. 🐎 Catch the full "Snaffle Bit Basics" series at B1Horsemanship.com 🔗 Link in the Bio #B1Horsemanship #SnaffleBitBasics #HorseTraining #ColtStarting #WesternHorsemanship

Tackroom talk pt.9 snaffles and progress of starting your horse. A lot of deciding when to move onto the next bit in your progression really is trial and error with your horse sometimes you try a bit and your horse isn’t ready so just go back to your other one till they are ready or…… allow them to figure out the next bit this takes lots of patience and soft slow hands! If you have questions I’ll make a part 2 to this video #tack #horses #trainertip

Stop the "Head Toss" in your transitions. In our Snaffle Bit Basics 2 series, we’re looking for a smooth, level departure. If your horse throws their head up when you ask for the trot, they’re telling you they’re braced or off-balance. The B1 Approach: Don’t get frustrated and don't get into a tug-of-war. The Repetition: We ask, we transition, and we stay calm. If she throws her head, we just bring her back and try again. The Goal: We wait for the moment she moves forward while staying soft in the bridle. It’s not about "making" them keep their head down it’s about rewarding the moment they choose to stay level and relaxed.
