JAThe Hairless Cub of the High Mountains
High in the freezing peaks of the Himalayas, where survival depends on strength and thick fur, I stumbled upon something I’ll never forget. Hidden inside a shallow crack between the rocks was a tiny snow leopard cub, shaking violently in the cold.
But something was different about him.
Unlike other snow leopard cubs wrapped in dense, smoky-grey fur, this one had none. His skin was pale and bare. He had been born with a rare genetic condition that left him completely hairless. In temperatures that drop far below zero, that meant almost certain death.
His mother had already moved on.
The Rescue
I didn’t think twice. I lifted the fragile little body and tucked him inside my insulated jacket, pressing him against my chest to share my warmth. I could feel how weak he was, how close he was to giving up.
“Hang on,” I whispered. “You’re not alone anymore.”
The Fight for Survival
Back at the station, I named him Ghost — because of his pale skin and quiet presence.
Keeping him alive became my full-time mission:
Warmth: Without fur, even normal room temperatures were too cold. I placed him in a controlled incubator and later dressed him in tiny custom-made wool sweaters.
Skin Care: His exposed skin was extremely delicate. I applied gentle, natural ointments daily to prevent dryness and infection.
Constant Feeding: Every three hours, day and night, I bottle-fed him a nutrient-rich formula to build his strength.

Ghost became a reminder that survival isn’t always about how you’re born — sometimes it’s about who refuses to give up on you.
He may never wear the royal fur of his ancestors, but he is still a king of the mountains in his own way — protected not by a coat, but by resilience, determination, and a second chance.
