We should get ready for a big solar storm. In 1859, the sun released a blast of energy toward Earth. When it arrived, telegraph machines sparked and the Northern Lights were visible as far as the tropics. The bizarrely dark-red aurora made people think that cities were on fire. It was the largest geomagnetic storm ever recorded, but it probably won’t be the last. We should prepare for one soon… #space #science #solarstorm #sun #solarflare #follow

🌞 A single solar flare… bigger than our entire world. This eruption blasting out of the Sun stretches ~2,10,000 km wide — about 16.4× the size of Earth. And this is just one flare from a star that makes up 99.8% of the mass of our solar system. Now zoom out further… Our Sun is just an average star. Our solar system is just a tiny dot. And the universe? Almost unimaginably vast. Cosmic scale has a way of humbling us — and reminding us how powerful nature truly is. 🌌🔥 • • • • #solarflare #sun #earth #astronomy #spacefacts

That’s not a close-up of a carpet. ☀️ What you’re seeing is a "hairy" view of the Sun’s chromosphere. The dark voids are Sunspots—magnetic knots larger than Earth. They look black only because they are 2,000 degrees cooler. The swirling "hairs" are plasma trapped in magnetic loops. That white-hot flash? That’s a Solar Flare igniting. This energy release can trigger X-class solar storms. When these magnetic fields snap, they launch billions of tons of plasma. If aimed at Earth, they create Auroras but can also fry satellites. We are currently approaching the Solar Maximum in 2026. Expect more of these "monsters" to appear on the surface. Save this if you love learning things like this. Share this with someone who would find this fascinating. If a solar flare knocked out the global internet for a month, what’s the first thing you’d do? 👇 . . . . . . . #astronomy #space #science #nasa #astrophotography cosmos universe nature physics explorepage sunspots solarflare solarmaximum chromosphere solarstorm spaceweather telescope halpha solartelescope stargazing solarphotography backyardastronomy astrophoto spacefacts sciencecommunication plasma magneticfields solarcycle25 sunspotregion deepsky

Sunspots and solar flares 🔥 On the surface of the sun there are areas where magnetic fields are particularly strong, which keeps the heat from reaching the surface, resulting in ‘cool’ patches called sunspots. These magnetic fields often tangle and cross, releasing a sudden explosion of energy, which we call a solar flare! #EarthCapture by @james.and.chips . . . . #Science #SolarSystem #SolarFlare

The northern lights were visible across much of North America on June 2, following a solar storm and coronal mass ejection over the weekend. The storm triggered NOAA space weather alerts but caused minimal disruption. With the sun in an active phase of its solar cycle, more aurora sightings are expected soon. #NorthernLights #SolarStorm #AuroraBorealis #SpaceWeather #NOAA #SolarFlare

Most passengers fight for the window seat. The view. The experience. The photos. Pilots don’t. And they have a very specific reason. Here’s what’s happening at 35,000 feet: The atmosphere is thinner. Earth’s magnetic field is weaker. Cosmic radiation passes through the cabin at levels 100x higher than on the ground. On a 7-hour flight from New York to London — a window seat passenger absorbs around 35 µSv of radiation. The equivalent of 1–2 chest X-rays. In a single flight. Window seat vs aisle — they’re not equal: A 2023 study placed radiation sensors throughout a Boeing 777. Window seat: 4.2 µSv per hour. Aisle seat: 2.9 µSv per hour. 31% difference. Why? Aircraft walls are aluminium — they partially block radiation. But windows are polycarbonate. Neutrons and protons pass through almost freely. What a pilot with 18,000 hours told me: “The FAA has classified pilots as Radiation Workers since 1990. Same category as radiologists. When I fly as a passenger — I always take the aisle. Why add 30% more exposure on my days off?” What smart travelers do: 1. Book aisle seats on long-haul flights Especially polar routes — NY to London, LA to Tokyo — where radiation levels are highest. 2. Apply SPF 50 on hands and face for flights over 8 hours Blocks secondary UV radiation through windows. 3. Check NOAA Space Weather before long flights During Solar Flare Events radiation at altitude spikes significantly. Free. Takes 30 seconds. The truth is simple: The seat with the best view is the seat with the highest exposure. Pilots have known this for decades. Now you do too. Save this before your next long-haul flight. Send it to someone who always books the window seat. Want to know what else pilots do differently that most passengers never consider? Link in profile. I post things most people learn too late. In 1859, the Carrington Event proved the Sun has a "dark side." It was the first time we ever saw a White Light Flare—and the results were terrifying. The storm hit Earth in just 17.6 hours—nearly 5x faster than a normal flare! ⚡️💨 Auroras were so bright that miners woke up at 1 AM to cook breakfast. 🍳🌌 Telegraphs sparked and sent messages while unplugged. 📟🔥 But what if it hits in 2026? 🚨 Our modern world isn't built for this. A repeat event would mean: Global Blackout: Fried power grids leaving cities dark for months. 🔌🌑 Tech Silence: No GPS, no Banking, no Internet. 📡❌ USD 2 Trillion Damage: A total economic collapse. . . . #astronomy #solarflare #sun #earth #trending
