What SOLID FOODS should you introduce to your baby? My name is Dr. Manickam and I’m a pediatrician and NICU doctor. In our prior videos, we talk about the criteria for starting solid foods and why its important to introduce common allergens like peanut butter early. So what are other solid foods can you give your baby early on? The answer is - almost anything. You can give them fruit, vegetables, fish, tofu, beans, etc. As long as you follow these 3 tips. 1: Make sure any new food you give is blended into a puree before giving it to your baby, even something like rice. This limits choking risks. Try blending the foods at home, rather than buying baby food from a store, that way you know exactly whats in it. And, to make it even easier, just blend an unseasoned portion of whatever you’re eating, one ingredient at a time so that you can monitor for allergies. Whether it’s an apple, sweet potato, or meat - as long as it’s blended into an applesauce, puree consistency, it will work. 2: introduce a new food at least 3 days apart - that way you can monitor for allergic reactions and know which food caused it. 3, know your baby’s allergy risks. If there is a family history of a food allergy, your baby has eczema, or has an egg allergy, then you should do all of your allergen exposures with an allergy specialist to reduce risk. BUT these things are important: A variety of textures and flavors (it’s okay to add spices and herbs to their diet) Healthy fats: avocado, certain oils, fatty fish, coconut cream, nut butters, chia seeds, ground flax seed Foods that help them poop: peaches, pears, prunes, higher fiber foods like beans or broccoli (though they can cause gas). If you’re making homemade purées, you can thin foods with 100% prune, pear or apple juice. Flax seed is also high in fiber. Again, it’s fine if you want to hit 100 foods before 1 but there is a little bit more to it! #Startingsolids #solidfoods #babyfood #babyledweaningideas #foodforbabies
