Are you stuck on purees? 🥣 Introducing different textures is key to helping your baby develop oral motor skills and prevent picky eating later on! This "Texture Ladder" shows you exactly how to progress throughout the first year. The Breakdown: 6-7 Months: Start with a smooth puree. It should be thin and easy to swallow as they learn the mechanics of eating. 7-8 Months: Move to a thick mash. Use a fork to leave some small soft lumps to encourage tongue movement. 8-10 Months: Transition to little pieces. Soft-cooked veggies or fruits cut into tiny, manageable bits (pincer grasp practice!). 10-12 Months: Big chunks/Finger foods. Soft solids cut into bite-sized pieces that they can feed themselves. Important Note: Always ensure food is soft enough to squish between your thumb and forefinger to prevent choking! ⚠️ #BabyLedWeaning #SolidStarts #BabyFoodIdeas #TextureLadder #FirstFoods

The mess doesn’t bother your baby 🧽 While some babies don’t mind at all, the vast majority of babies will react negatively to frequent and/or aggressive wiping of their face and hands during and after mealtime. And while the mess may be tough for you to watch, we promise: your baby doesn’t mind! Additionally, your baby can — and wants to — feed themselves! Even if you’re only doing purées, hand the spoon over or release it when your baby brings it to their mouth. Yes, it’s messy, but there are many benefits to letting your baby explore. To help baby avoid negative associations with their high chair, try these tips for cleaning up: 1️⃣ Prepare baby. Try not to surprise or catch them off guard with wiping 2️⃣ Bring a pitcher of water to the table to help with cleanup or if you can, move directly to the sink 3️⃣ Use soft wipes for baby’s face which can be extra sensitive especially after consuming acidic foods 4️⃣ Sing a favorite song or play music to lighten the mood 5️⃣ Count it Out. Give baby a set time for how long cleanup will last And if all else fails, guide their hand with a washcloth to show them how it’s done or hand it over to give them a bit of ownership in the process. #SolidStarts #babyledweaning #babyledweaningideas #firstfoods #whatmybabyeats

One of the best parts of starting solids is being able to share the meal you’re having with your baby! 🍲 This video features the same baby at 6 through 10 months old to demonstrate that these foods can be offered beginning at 6 months and as your baby grows! While offering just one or two pieces of food is all your baby actually needs at 6 mos, and all most babies will be ready for, you can give them whatever you’re having too, as long as you prepare it in a way that’s safe for their age. Of course there are some foods that are never safe for babies so be sure you avoid those ingredients, but otherwise share away! ⚠️ Always be sure you’ve ruled out common allergens before you offer a dish that contains them. Other than that, you don’t need to introduce each food separately from another or wait theee days between foods. Have a recipe that calls for multiple ingredients — that’s ok! Just be sure you know exactly how to serve that food. All details on baby’s first foods can be found in our app 😉 ➡️ Want recipes? What to do with big bites: It’s normal to feel nervous when you are introducing finger foods, and your baby bites off a big piece of food–can they handle it? Is it safe? This is bound to happen–many times, and is a valuable part of the learning process. First, it’s important to remember that self-feeding is highly protective against choking, as baby is getting tons of information about the food as they are bringing the food to their own mouth. This helps prime all of the oral motor muscles to get them ready to more effectively manage the food. Taking a bite tells the brain, hey, time to move that food around! Once that piece is bitten off, and this can happen with or without teeth, one of 4 things will happen: ✔️Baby may chew it ✔️Baby may swallow it (and its ok if its not well chewed!) ✔️Baby may spit the food out ✔️Baby may gag. This can look scary, but know its not dangerous. Gagging helps your baby learn how to move the food around in their mouth. When their tongue doesn’t have good control of the food, the gag kicks in to close off the breathing tube, and keep the food far away from it. Each gag or mistake helps them learn! ✔️Baby may hold the food in their mouth, not knowing exactly what to do next, in which case they would benefit from being coached to spit. None of these require you putting your hands in your baby’s mouth. By allowing this to happen naturally, baby will become increasingly confident and efficient at managing these pieces of food on their own. #babyledweaning6months #blw #babyledweaning #startingsolids #SolidStarts

Let baby watch you eat 🥦👀 Although it may not seem as “important” as working on motor skills like sitting and reaching, having a strong interest in food and eating is a cornerstone of developing a positive mealtime dynamic and seeing success at the table during those early meals. Babies have no idea that food is delicious or should fill the belly and the more they watch us pick up food and put it in our mouths, the more likely this will click for them when they eventually join in on the fun. Eating in front of your baby teaches them to imitate you and eventually, want to feed themselves. We all have mirror neurons—brain cells that light up as powerfully in response to watching someone else do an activity as they do when you, yourself do the same activity. Watching a trusted caregiver eat over and over again essentially builds the desire and motor skill in baby to try to do it on their own. When it’s their turn to explore food they will be familiar, interested, and primed to pick up that food and do it on their own. Babies show intense interest in what adults enjoy—i.e., cell phones, keys, remotes—so show baby that eating and mealtimes are fun by smiling, laughing, and engaging with food and friends or family around the table. Make meals a place baby wants to be. #babyledweaning #solidstarts #firstfoods #6monthsold #startingsolids #100firstfoods #blw

Smash for less risk 🫐 The round shape of blueberries makes them a potential choking hazard, but there are ways to minimize the risk. The details: 1️⃣ Blueberries may be introduced as soon as baby is ready for solids. Not sure if baby is ready? See our website (link in bio, search “Readiness”). 2️⃣ In addition to fiber, blueberries are packed with vitamins C and E as well as antioxidants, to help support baby’s immune system and resilience against stressors. 3️⃣ Blueberries are not a common allergen, but blueberry allergies are possible. Individuals who are sensitive to blueberry may also react to lingonberry and cranberry, which are closely related. ➡️ Complete details by age in the Solid Starts App! #babyledweaning #firstfoods #solidstarts #6monthsold #blw
