GRSpent some time thinking about the word “Labor” today.
Life started with the word; when my mother labored to get me here alive…I learned to respect those who labored to build a safe, beautiful, functional world for me to grow up in…I joined the labor force at 13 mopping floors, painting houses, serving food, hanging drywall…
Then I became a musician; and I guess you could say I’ve since “labored” in a different way - traveling the globe in service of those who find solace in music…but having grown up with my sleeves rolled up, it never felt like labor with a capitol “L”. (Although I’ve been told it’s is very much the wheel that turns the music industry as we know it.)
I experienced child labor in my body, bringing my son into the world…and I’ve continued to labor to build him a safe, beautiful, functional world ... my family labored as we fought to save that world from multiple fires & floods…
…How can one word could be so over-extended?
Maybe that’s why I started gardening. I’ve never felt so fulfilled, defeated, helpless AND satisfied all at once. It crushes me every time I come home from tour to my perfectly curated domain being flooded, burned, over-grown, under-watered or all the above… but that very disappointment is what inspires me to get up early and dig back in. More importantly, it’s given me a chance to slow down and enjoy the amazing people in my life as we all find solace in the weeds. It’s taught me patience that never existed in any other quadrant of my life. It fuels my joy. It’s not survival, it’s complete and utter folly…but it’s manual labor…and somehow, it fixes my soul a little bit every day.

You ever start something new... and your skin just knows it needed it?
For years I’ve struggled with eczema and was constantly trying to find the “right” internal support. Fish oil? I cannot touch and many with eczema can’t either. Flax? Meh. Nothing ever truly made a difference for me.

VERelationships are intended for us to learn from them.
My relationship with my children have been the greatest source of learning how to get out of patterns that I learned growing up.
I’ve published articles and recently hosted a podcast about what it’s like being the parent of adult children. It’s one of those areas that many people don’t talk about because navigating these relationships are nuanced but still so rich with opportunity.
