KADyslexia is a learning disability that impacts someone’s ability to learn, read and, interpret words/letters/symbols. Dyslexia itself does NOT impact general intelligence. It’s one of the more commonly understood and diagnosed learning disabilities. Dyslexia can be treated but not cured. People with dyslexia will always struggle with reading in some capacity, but intervention can minimize how significant that struggle is for the individual. 📚👀

Whether they’re feeling anxious, fidgety, or just need a moment of quiet focus, these strips provide an immediate and subtle way for them to self-regulate. I bought some for my classroom last year and the students are able to pick their favorites before I stick it on their table. 🌈🤍🩵🩷💛
What’s fantastic is how the students can use them independently, taking a quick moment to touch or rub the textured strip on their desk, notebook, or even on the go. 📓 This small act can help them regain focus and calm down, especially during moments that might otherwise turn to a significant escalation.
In situations where students begin to feel overwhelmed, I encourage them to take a ‘Calm Break’ using the strips, empowering them to regain control over their emotions and decisions. It’s incredible how this tiny, portable sensory tool can have such a big impact. 🙏🏻
Since introducing Calm Strips, I’ve noticed fewer instances of outbursts and more students choosing to use this sensory tool as their go-to strategy to reset and stay focused. I can’t believe how much of a difference they make, especially during moments of high energy or stress.

This 3-day in-person course will integrate dance/movement therapy theory with concepts of development and best practices in dance education to teach participants how to create dance activities that engage the strengths and meet the needs of children and adolescents who have emotional, behavioral, learning, sensory, and/or physical challenges.
Dr. Diane Duggan (@dd102019) and special guest, Kitty Lunn (@kitty.lunn), will teach participants both group and individual strategies to promote positive behavior and how to apply these strategies in dance/movement therapy or dance education settings.

THThis is why a lot of people will never understand what success looks like in a self-contained special education classroom.
They are looking for big, obvious, traditional milestones.
Meanwhile, special education teachers are celebrating things like participation, imitation, regulation, communication attempts, smoother transitions, independence in routines, and tiny moments of connection that other people miss completely.
Success in special education is not always loud.
Sometimes it looks like a student staying with the group longer.
Sometimes it looks like a student using a switch on purpose.
Sometimes it looks like less distress, more trust, or one small step toward independence.
If you teach in a self-contained classroom, you know the real wins are often subtle, but they matter deeply.
That is why this work can be hard to explain to people outside of special education. They do not always know what they are looking at.
