The wait and watch approach is certainly appropriate in some situations, however, in general I prefer the approach of early evaluation rather than waiting too long and missing the window of opportunity. There is never any harm in getting a free developmental evaluation that you are entitled to by the state if you have concerns about your child’s development when they are under the age of 3. Waiting too long, however, can have negative consequences and potentially limit your child’s full potential if they do have a true underlying reason for their delay. #speechdelay #speechdevelopment #developmentalmilestones #developmentaldelay #earlyintervention #pediatrician #parentingtips

👀Wondering how you can help your child start saying their name? 🗣️Try these three steps from speech and language pathologists Bridget Hillsberg and Brooke Dwyer of @SpeechSisters: Step 1️⃣ ASK your child and ANSWER for them. Tap their chest and say “What is your name?” Then, say their name. Do this several times a day for about a month. Step 2️⃣ After a month or so, ASK your child and START the sound of their name. For example, if their name begins with “S,” say, “What is your name? Ssss…” Step 3️⃣ After months of practicing the first two steps, ASK your child and WAIT. Say “What is your name?” Then, wait five to 10 seconds. Your child may be able to answer independently. You can start teaching your child to say their name when they’re around 12 months old. Just make sure they’re able to respond to it, so you know they’re ready. The time needed for each step varies from child to child, so be patient. ❤️ #Lovevery #SpeechSisters #SLP #SpeechDevelopment #ParentingTips Is your little one saying their name yet?👇

Stitch with @jenmariegreer on TIkTok   If your baby sounds like they escaped Jurassic Park, don’t panic. They are not backtracking to prehistoric days. That screeching is actually part of normal development.   This phase can feel chaotic, especially when it kicks in the second you try to talk to another adult and they look at your baby like, “Was that a bird or…?” But what looks like noise is actually early communication doing important work. Before words ever appear, babies build language through pre-verbal skills. These are the foundation of speech, not extras.   Pre-verbal skills include: ✔️ Back and forth interaction, learning that communication goes both ways ✔️ Joint attention, noticing something and checking to see if you noticed too ✔️ Cause and effect, realizing their voice gets a response ✔️ Intentional communication, using sounds on purpose instead of at random ✔️ Sound exploration, figuring out what their mouth and breath can do   This is why talking back, pausing, and responding like it’s a real conversation matters so much. You are teaching conversation long before your baby has words.   In a previous podcast episode, I sat down with Melissa Minney, speech language pathologist and mom behind @raisinglittletalkers. We talk about what pre-verbal skills are, how early they show up, how parents can support them, what to watch for, and how gestures and language work together. If this phase has you wondering what’s normal and what actually helps, this episode will give you clarity. You can listen by searching the title “The importance of pre-verbal skills in language and communication” wherever you access podcasts.   Share this with a parent currently living with a baby pterodactyl, or follow for more evidence-based parenting support.   Does your baby screech most when you’re on the phone or talking to another adult?   #languagedevelopment #speechdevelopment #babytalk #parentingbabies #pediatrician earlycommunication

Why don’t sounds “come out” even when a child tries? Because speech is not only about hearing and imitation. It is the precise and coordinated work of the tongue, lips, and cheeks. If the muscles of the speech organs work weakly or are not coordinated, it becomes difficult for a child to hold sounds, switch tongue positions, and speak clearly — even if they understand speech well. 🎥 In this video, we show a part of a session where through play we train the tongue, improve mobility, and build the foundation for clear speech. This type of preparation helps speed up sound development and avoids endless repetitions without results. 📌 When articulation and breathing exercises are especially important: unclear or distorted speech sounds weak tongue or constantly open mouth nasal speech tone slow progress in speech therapy ✨ These simple exercises help strengthen the speech muscles and improve clarity in speech. #speechtherapy #therapy #speechdevelopment #childdevelopment

Down in the Jungle 🌴 My kindergartner has been dying to do this silly song with me recently. And why not? It’s kind of hilarious, we can make up new animals with each verse, and it’s actually really good to do songs like these with nonsense sounds! 🧠 They build phonemic awareness — learning to hear & distinguish sounds is the foundation of speech AND reading 👄 They exercise mouth muscles — those “boom boogie” sounds make kiddos practice the movements needed for real words 🎶 Language scaffolding through rhythm - the beat helps kids predict patterns, which is literally how sentence structure works 🔁 Repetition builds memory - silly songs repeat sounds and words in a low-pressure, joyful way that makes the brain lock it in ❤️ Silliness makes for better bonding and therefore better learning. When a caregiver is being goofy with them, toddlers are emotionally engaged, and that’s when the best learning happens (Thank you for coming to my TED talk on silly songs) 🤪 #preschoolteacher #playbasedlearning #momoflittles #circletime #speechdevelopment
