if you still can’t wrap your head around the connection between bijections and cardinality, say you’ve gotta set a table of four. that means you need four plates and four spoons, right?
what your brain does is instantly pairs a spoon to a plate. in other words, for every plate you’ve got, there must be a spoon as well.
we operate with the same principle with bijections and cardinality. if i can pair every single number in one set to a distinct number in another set, the cardinality of both sets is equal.
it’s said that this idea of pairing objects existed even prior to our traditional counting methods, isn’t that fascinating?
