Your entire approach is decided by the first step. Most athletes start their approach by projecting their shoulders forward. The problem is that when the shoulders go first, the hips lag behind — and that kills horizontal displacement and first step efficiency❌ This hip projection drill teaches athletes how to organize the start correctly. The goal is to project the hips forward, not the chest. To do that, both legs have to work simultaneously: • the front leg pulls the track back🎯 • the back leg pushes the body forward🎯 Think of it like creating a broad jump trajectory, where the body is moving forward immediately instead of falling into the step. Another key point is force application through the glutes, not just the quads. When athletes rely too heavily on the quads, the movement becomes more vertical and less efficient for building horizontal momentum‼️ When the hips project correctly: • the first step covers more ground✅ • the body builds momentum earlier in the approach✅ • the remainder of the run stays efficient and more powerful✅ If the first step is inefficient, the rest of the approach is already playing catch up🤷🏿‍♂️ SAVE this to train the projection of the hips, not the shoulders⚠️ #trackandfield #biomechanics #acceleration #csperformancelab #scottysperformancelab

Measuring ground contact time on a drop jump or drop hop test using force plates like AxIT Stomp-IT is crucial for assessing the performance of running athletes as it provides valuable insights into their neuromuscular control and efficiency during explosive movements. Shorter ground contact times typically indicate rapid force production and better power-to-weight ratios, both essential for sprinting. Efficient energy transfer and minimal ground contact times are paramount for running speed and agility. Typically endurance athletes don't have the same reactive capacity as sprinters however useful baselines can still be used to gauge their performance. By tracking ground contact times in these tests, coaches and sports scientists can pinpoint weaknesses, optimize training regimens, and enhance athletes' capacity to generate explosive power, ultimately improving their running performance and competitive edge. Strength and Rate of Force Development Tuesday, March 31, 2026 On Tuesdays and Thursdays, our track team spends time in the weight room or perform some version of strength training. Today’s session wasn’t just a workout… it was a purpose-driven performance system designed to build real speed, real power, and real results on the track. Here are some videos from today’s session so you can see exactly how our athletes are putting in the work. What we did: We opened with a barbell complex: 1️⃣. High pulls 2️⃣. Power cleans 3️⃣. Front squat → push press 4️⃣. Bent rows 5️⃣. Romanian deadlifts Purpose: Activate the nervous system and prepare the body to produce force at a high level. Then we moved into single-leg strength paired with explosive movements: ✔️ Rear Foot Elevated Split Squats → Split Jumps ✔️ Single-Leg RDLs → Singe Leg Depth Drops ✔️ Explosive Step-Ups → 5-Second Pause Squat Purpose: Build real strength where it matters (one leg at a time) Convert that strength into speed and explosiveness Improve balance, stability, and reduce injury risk We finished with: 5 × 30m hill sprints (in the video) 1 × 50m hill sprint (in the video) Purpose: Transfer everything we built in the weight room directly into acceleration on the track The Science Behind It: This method uses what’s called Post-Activation Performance Enhancement (PAPE) Heavy + explosive work “primes” the nervous system Allows athletes to run faster, jump higher, and produce more power We train: Force → Power → Speed Because if it doesn’t transfer to the track… it doesn’t matter. And here’s the real message: The ladies you see in these videos? They’re not relying on talent alone. They’re building something stronger than that. 👉 Discipline 👉 Consistency 👉 Work ethic Because at the end of the day: Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard. Proud of this group. This is what it looks like when athletes choose growth over comfort. #GoElks #BuiltNotBorn #TrackAndField #SpeedDevelopment #HardWorkWins

Most athletes think sprinting is about moving faster. It’s not. Top speed is limited by how much force you can apply to the ground… in less than 0.1 seconds. Faster athletes don’t move their legs quicker — they hit the ground harder and faster. That’s why RSI and tendon stiffness matter. If your ground contact is slow, you’re not training speed. You’re just jumping. Drop jumps train stiffness and fast ground contact. Broad-to-vertical jumps train force transfer. Lateral jumps build control and resilience. Resisted–Free Block Acceleration Contrast A powerful acceleration drill used to bridge force production and sprint speed expression. The sequence begins with a resistance sled block start, forcing the athlete to apply greater horizontal force and maintain optimal projection angles during the first steps of acceleration. Immediately following this, the athlete performs an unresisted block start, allowing the nervous system to express higher movement velocity and improved stride efficiency. This contrast method enhances the transfer between strength and sprint mechanics, creating a strong stimulus for acceleration development. Sequence • Resisted Sled Block Start • Unresisted Block Start Training Benefits ✔ Improves horizontal force application from the blocks ✔ Enhances acceleration mechanics and projection angle ✔ Stimulates neuromuscular potentiation ✔ Transfers strength into sprint-specific speed A simple but highly effective drill to develop explosive block exits and early acceleration performance. #SprintTraining #AccelerationDevelopment #SpeedTraining #HighPerformanceCoaching #TrackAndField

Fun in practice doesn’t mean we lose the edge — it means we sharpen it. ⚡️ Today’s session was centered around high-speed acceleration over 30 meters, but with a competitive twist: each athlete had either a 2-meter advantage or disadvantage. The objective? Get to your cone first — or track down the athlete in front of you. One mistake and you’re caught. This setup demanded sharp reaction, total focus, and real competitiveness. Athletes had to explode out, accelerate quickly, smoothly, and efficiently — no wasted movement, no panic. Just controlled aggression under pressure. We also tracked select athletes’ speed during the session using FiyrPod GPS technology to measure top velocity and acceleration data. 📊 The numbers don’t lie — and we’ll be sharing those results soon. When training is competitive, intentional, and measurable, development goes to another level. That’s how we build speed. That’s how we build competitors. 💨🔥 #TrackAndField #SprintTraining #Acceleration #SpeedDevelopment #competition
