EVEvan’s Stall Cleaning Triangle Principle - For choosing a stall cleaning method!
Three objectives:
- Cleanliness
- Shavings/$ Savings
- Quickness
YOU CAN ONLY CHOOSE 2!
Let’s break it down…
Cleanliness + Shavings/$ Savings - This method leaves the stalls looking clean and your wallet more full, but it takes longer! Make sure it fits into your schedule! Usually involves picking out the manure where it is, carefully scraping the fresh shavings off the top of a pee spot, and sifting every scoop of the pitchfork.
Quickness + Cleanliness - This method leaves the stall clean and lets you get to the other barn chores faster, but it comes at a cost of going through more shavings costing you more money over time. Usually involves picking up manure with the pitchfork and not sifting, just throwing it in the muck wheelbarrow. And picking out everywhere there is a pee spot without scraping off the top layer of clean shavings. Then adding another bag of shavings to replace what came out.
Quickness + Shavings/$ Savings - This method is quick, and leaves a lot of shavings in the stall, but they might be dirty, pee soaked shavings and not give the stall and overall cleanliness feeling. Usually involves immediately throwing everything against the wall and picking out the large chunks of manure that rolls to the bottom of the mound, but it mixes fresh shavings with dirty shavings and sometimes buries manure along the edge of the wall and floor that you’ll find later.
Hope this is a helpful principle for yourself or for you to discuss with your grooms or stablehands. But take into account outside factors like how many horses you have and how many barn chores your are responsible for! 😂🐴
As mentioned in the video, my method of choice is the first one, but I’m definitely not the fastest!
