A powerful explosion rocked the White House this morning, shaking nearby buildings, shattering windows and causing chaos in the heart of the U.S. capital. Security officials confirmed the incident occurred at about 9:15 a.m. local time, and the U.S. Secret Service immediately placed the White House on lockdown.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and thick black smoke coming from the north side of the White House grounds. “We heard a loud explosion, like the ground shook,” one witness near Lafayette Park told reporters. “Everyone started running and the police arrived very quickly.”
A U.S. Secret Service spokesman said in an initial statement: “We are closely investigating this incident. The president and his family are safe and have been moved to a safe location.
