“Bro I’ll just give Step 1.”
Stop.
This pathway requires:
1–2 years of preparation
US Clinical Experience (USCE)
Research
Strong CV building
Networking
Multiple attempts strategy planning
If you’re starting late without strategy, you’ll waste time and money.
❌ 2. If You Are the Only Earning Member
Be honest.
The full pathway can cost:
Exam fees (Step 1, Step 2 CK)
OET
ECFMG certification
USCE rotations
Travel + visa
Application fees
Interview travel (if in-person)
It can easily cross $15,000–$25,000+
If your family depends on you financially
and there are no savings,
this pathway can create massive pressure.
Stress kills performance.
❌ 3. If You Cannot Handle Uncertainty
Match is not guaranteed.
Even after clearing exams, you may not match on first attempt.
The National Resident Matching Program publishes match data every year — and thousands don’t match.
Imagine: 2–3 years invested. Money invested. Emotional energy invested.
And no seat.
If uncertainty destroys you mentally — rethink.
❌ 4. If You Struggle With Long-Term Discipline
USMLE is not a “motivation” exam.
It’s:
8–10 hour study days
Repeated revision
Question banks like UWorld done multiple times
Deep understanding, not memorization

Residency in the US is long.
3–7 years depending on specialty.

Research rejection.

This system tests resilience more than intelligence.
❌ 7. If You’re Choosing It Only Because It’s “Trending”
Don’t choose USMLE because:
Your seniors are doing it
Instagram makes it look glamorous
Someone said “US doctors earn in dollars”
Choose it because:
You understand the grind
You calculated the cost
You are mentally ready
You have long-term strategy

BLNervous about your first time in the OR? Here are my own personal tips to help you look like a seasoned pro: 🏥
1. Write your name on the whiteboard as soon as you walk into the room. Make sure you introduce yourself to ALL the OR staff, not just the surgeons or scrub techs!
2. If it’s your first time in the OR or your first time scrubbing in, tell EVERYONE. I know that seems overboard, but don’t be shy! Tell EVERYONE it’s your first time. People should be nice and helpful, but it’s safer for everyone if you are just honest and let the OR staff guide you.
3. Don’t ever expect people to get your gown and gloves for you. When you are going to scrub into a case as a student, ask the scrub tech where you can get your gown and gloves. Don’t know your size? Try 7 for a medium, 6 for a small, 8 for a large, and troubleshoot from there!
4. Don’t talk during the time out. This is an important safety check, so if you hear someone say ”let’s do a time out,” zip your lips until it’s over so you don’t get shushed.
5. If you end up breaking the sterile field, it’s okay! Just be honest, and don’t try to hide it. Let someone know, and they’ll get you new gloves/ a new gown. It’s better to break the sterile field and be honest for safety reasons than to let your pride get in the way. Honesty is always the best policy!
