REI’m the oldest of three daughters. The one who went first in everything. And who matters the least.
Three years ago, a month before my wedding, my mother ended our relationship over text.
There isn’t really a manual for that kind of shock. No warning or fight. To this day, I have no idea what happened.
I used to wonder what I did wrong. I've thought about it more times than I can count. I have theories, but that's it. I may never know.
Now I wonder something different.
Will she and I reconnect on Earth or in Heaven? My gut feeling is in Heaven, where it won't matter any longer.
This anniversary doesn’t make me angry anymore. It makes me aware of how much I’ve grown. I'm wistful, but I've accepted it.
Sometimes, the person who gave you life can’t go where your life is taking you. And that hurts. But it doesn’t mean you’re wrong for becoming who you are.
I’m still a daughter.
I’m still worthy.
And I’m still building a life I’m proud of.
And making sure my daughter never knows this pain.
