LGI’m in a crawl space in Charlotte, North Carolina and this is Building Science 101.
Insulation falling out of the cavity? That is not a cosmetic issue. That is physics. The @resnetus data is clear: insulation that is not in full contact, not aligned with the air barrier, and not fully enclosed does not perform at labeled R-value. Grade III install? You can lose a massive chunk of real performance. The “R-13” only exists in a laboratory hot box — airtight on all six sides. That is how R-value is tested. Airtight box. No wind. No convective looping. Perfect alignment.
Out here? Gravity wins. Air wins. Moisture wins.
You do not get six-sided encapsulation when insulation is stapled to the underside of the floor and allowed to sag. You get thermal bypass. You get air washing. You get convective looping. The charts do not lie: once air moves through fibrous insulation, effective R-value rotates downward fast.
And this plastic on the underside? That is a moisture trap in Climate Zone 3/4. Floors over crawl spaces need to dry. You see the dark staining? That is what trapped moisture looks like.
Air control first. Vapor control second. Thermal control aligned with both.
If you insist on insulating the floor, you need:
• Full cavity contact
• Airtight band joists
• Continuous air barrier aligned with insulation
• Vapor-open strategy (smart vapor retarder at most)
Or — and this is usually smarter — insulate the crawl space walls (exterior preferred), condition the crawl, and bring the ducts and floor system inside the enclosure. Fewer control layers. Less complexity. Better durability. Simpler geometry wins.
You cannot out-ventilate physics.
You cannot cheat the hot box.
Continuity is not optional.

What about wool insulation?
Wool is a good insulation, no doubt. But like anything else, it comes down to how it’s installed.
Wool (like Rockwool) is a piecework product, meaning:
• It has to be cut to fit each cavity
• It’s only as good as the installer
• Gaps or poor cuts = lost performance
And one key thing you can’t compress it.
Insulation works by trapping air, so if you pack it too tight, it actually loses effectiveness.
That’s where spray-in systems like @greenfibersanctuary cellulose have a big advantage. It fills every nook and cranny automatically, without relying on perfect cuts or fits.
When it comes to sound control, both wool and cellulose perform really well. That’s measured by STC rating (Sound Transmission Class) and most insulation types are pretty comparable there.
The real difference?
Consistency of install and real-world performance.
R-value doesn’t tell the whole story how the material fits and performs in the wall matters just as much.
