On Saturday, FLAP Canada held its annual #bird layout event at @featherfriendly in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada where approximately 3,000 birds were displayed. Each of these #birds was killed by colliding with glass on buildings in Ontario, and collected by FLAP volunteers. Bird collisions are preventable. This year’s bird layout was dedicated to acknowledging the importance of partnerships for bird conservation, and the fact that migratory birds know no borders. We were honoured to be joined by visitors and speakers from across sectors, including politicians, environmental groups, journalists, artists, glass manufacturers, window cleaners and more. Each of us have a key role to play in our collective movement aimed at saving billions of birds’ lives and addressing the causes of biodiversity loss. We wish to extend our thanks to everyone who played a part in making this event possible, particularly FLAP volunteers for their ongoing bird rescue and recovery efforts. Thanks to @ontarionature @naturecanada_ @chrisglovermpp @therealmargaretatwood @animaljustice_ @cornellbirds for your ongoing support. At the bird layout we heard from MPP Mike Schreiner @mikeschreinergpo who focussed our attention on Bill 98 being debated in the legislature this week. If passed by the Government of #Ontario, this bill will eliminate municipal building design standards across the province that are protecting birds from collisions with glass. It risks erasing decades of municipally-led progress on addressing this issue in Canada, and would set us behind the United States in terms of protections for birds through regulation of building construction at state and municipal levels. Mike encouraged our audience to contact our provincial representatives and the Premier’s office to stress the importance of preserving municipal green building standards. We will continue to share media captured at the layout event over the coming weeks. In the U.S. alone, collisions with glass kill over one billion birds every year. Researchers at Western University’s bird tunnel testing facility show what fails: a single decal or sticker. Birds see the open spaces and slam into the glass. Here’s how you stop collisions: Add external patterns of dots, stripes, or films spaced 2” apart. Hang vertical cords 4” apart. Take these simple, cost-effective steps and save countless birds. Learn more throught the link in our bio. Right now, migratory birds are making epic journeys—crossing continents and oceans—to return to their breeding grounds. From the Arctic tundra to the southern tips of Africa, from South America to Canada, billions of migratory birds take flight, guided by the stars, Earth’s magnetic fields, and ancient memory. Some travel up to 20,000 kilometers—a feat of endurance unmatched in the natural world. But increasingly, their journeys are ending in tragedy. Artificial lights lure them off course. Transparent glass deceives them. Habitat loss leaves them nowhere to land, desertification is reducing access to clean water, pesticides are reducing their access to food. Hunters are shooting them mid flight. Each year, up to one billion birds die in the U.S. alone due to window collisions only. Across the globe, the numbers are even higher. These aren’t rare species in remote forests—they’re the warblers, swifts, thrushes, and nightjars that fill our mornings with song and pollinate our forests. Their loss may seem silent, but it’s massive and has global repercussions. You can help reverse this. • Turn off non-essential lights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., especially during peak migration months. • Apply simple bird-safe decals or patterns to large windows. Birds can’t see glass the way we do. • Protect native habitat—every tree, wetland, and patch of green offers a place to rest. • Share this message. Inspire your city, your workplace, your building to go #LightsOutForBirds. We live beneath the same skies—but they need to migrate for their survival. Let’s make sure their ancient paths remain open, safe, and full of life. #BringBirdsBack #GlobalMigration #BirdSafeWorld #StopBirdCollisions #LightsOutForBirds #UrbanEcology #migratorybirds #avesmigratorias #aves #birds

🌿 Making windows safe for birds at home is easier than you think! Whether it's little dots, stretches of tape, or even temporary solutions like paint, soap, or netting – every effort counts! The key? The “two-inch rule” — place decals or patterns no more than two inches apart so birds can spot the danger. 🪶 From homes to businesses, these small changes are spreading fast. Be a part of the movement and make your windows safer for birds today! For more information on how to help birds in your community, check out the link in bio. For years, McCormick Place Lakeside in Chicago posed a deadly risk to migrating birds. Its massive glass façade led to countless collisions. Then, in October 2023, a mass collision event sparked urgent action. Managers partnered with Feather Friendly® to install bird-friendly dot patterns on nearly two football fields of glass. Now, longtime bird monitor David Willard is reporting a dramatic drop in collisions. More than 1 billion birds die each year in the U.S. by colliding with glass alone. You’ve seen our Lights Out Alerts to help protect birds at night, but what about during the day? 🌅 Glass is dangerous for birds, as this video from @cornellbirds explains. Research estimates more than one billion birds die in collisions with structures annually. Since 2022, Birds Georgia has retrofitted over 5,000 square feet of glass with a special bird-friendly film aimed at reducing or eliminating collisions, thanks to generous grants from @disneyconservation. We’ve also been studying collision-related bird deaths through our Project Safe Flight program since 2015. #BringBirdsBack #StopBirdCollisions #BirdSafeStructures #BirdSafeAction #LightsOutforBirds
