NIHappy Saturday y’all from the Piano Road. 🎹
Still riding the Paul McCartney wave after watching the Man on the Run documentary on Amazon, which dives into his post-Beatles years and the incredible journey of Wings. It inspired me to take a shot this morning at the title track from the classic 1973 album Band on the Run.
Fun discovery…we still have our original vinyl copy of the album. The cover is that famous prison-break photo with Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine running alongside a random but very cool group of celebrities. The story goes that Paul simply called people he had in his phonebook who happened to be nearby and invited them to the photo shoot. So you’ve got folks like James Coburn, Christopher Lee, and a few other British personalities all posing together. Kind of a spontaneous rock-and-roll moment in time.
As for my version, this is pure Nickyoke style. I had actually never sat down and played Band on the Run before today, even though I’ve heard it a million times. Most of these covers are like that…songs I know well but have never really worked out on the piano.
So what you’re hearing here are two quick takes. I ran through it once, then recorded a second pass and layered the videos together. I kept both audio tracks in there too, which gives it a bit of a doubled piano and vocal effect. Traded out the synth for a more piano-road effect😜🎹🎶
Also a little Georgia connection…Wings drummer Joe English was from Macon, and trombonist Tony Dorsey toured with Paul during the Wings years.
Anyway…two takes, one run on the Piano Road.

Martin’s formal musical expertise and interest in novel recording practices facilitated the group’s rudimentary musical education and desire for new musical sounds to record. Most of their orchestral and string arrangements were written by Martin, and he played piano or keyboards on a number of their records. Their collaborations resulted in popular, highly acclaimed records with innovative sounds, such as the 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

As someone who had speech problems growing up, I can heavily relate to Ringo - though it was more with my CH's and less with G's lol
That being said, while you boys and girls are singing along, I'll provide the necessary background:
Originally written and recorded by Larry Williams in 1958, the song became a favorite in Liverpool club circuits thanks to its driving piano and urgent vocal style!
The Beatles recorded their version on July 16th, 1963, at Abbey Road Studios (as per usual) with George Martin producing - the lead vocal was handled by John, whose raw, raspy delivery gave the cover extra edge.
The track was released in 1964 on the US album 'Something New', while in the UK it appeared on the 'Long Tall Sally' EP.
As I've mentioned a couple times now, The Beatles frequently covered American R&B and rock ’n’ roll artists in their early years, and this particular track is a prime example of how they injected their own punch and intensity into classic material during the height of Beatlemania!

About the song:
“Honey Don't”, originally, is a rockabilly song written and first recorded in 1956 by Carl Perkins and became one of the many American rock 'n roll songs later covered by The Beatles during the early '60s!
The Beatles recorded their version in 1964 for the album 'Beatles for Sale' - the lead vocal was sung by drummer Ringo Starr, while John added playful spoken interjections like “Rock on, George, one time for me!”
Their version stayed relatively close to the original rockabilly style, reflecting the band’s love of early American rock and roll artists like Carl Perkins, whom they admired and frequently covered in their live shows 🙌🏽
Certainly another deep cup worth listening to!
