“Santeria” — from Sublime (released July 30, 1996)
Bradley Nowell died on May 25, 1996. Two months later, the self-titled record drops. “Santeria” wasn’t even released as a single until 1997. By then, the band didn’t exist. It climbs radio anyway and becomes the song everyone associates with them.
Important detail: this wasn’t some polished pop crossover attempt. It was built off a scratch demo called “Lincoln Highway Dub.” The final version keeps that loose, almost tossed-off vocal take. The solo? Nowell tracked it in one pass. Didn’t redo it. Didn’t clean it up. That slightly out-of-tune bend near the end stays.
By 1997 it’s everywhere — alternative radio, spring break comps, backyard parties. A posthumous hit that outlived the band that made it. That almost never happens at this scale.
