Why don’t I think ethics and welfare training will solve the veterinary profession’s problems? This is an excerpt from my favorite article, In Medicine, the Morally Unthinkable Too Easily Comes to Seem Normal by Dr. Carl Elliott. So what actually drives change? Sometimes it seems the only way to achieve meaningful reform is through external pressure, such as oversight bodies, legislators, litigation, or public scrutiny. But I also think the key is teaching doctors to resist the pressures of social conformity, ending our deference to authority and use of euphemisms, and, of course, protecting whistleblowers and teaching our colleagues to recognize the rhetorical techniques used to discredit whistleblowers. This conversation comes at a time when Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine defends its horse and goat killing lab despite calls from veterinarians and students to spare the lives of the animals involved, who could instead be adopted or transferred to sanctuaries. #onehealth #vetmed #vetstudent #veterinarymedicine #animalwelfare
