The water exploded before the wildebeest even understood the warning.
One heartbeat it was stepping forward, hooves sinking into the soft bank, and the next—a crocodile surged from the river like a force that had been waiting forever. Jaws clamped onto the wildebeest’s flank, dragging, anchoring, refusing to release. Mud and water churned violently as the wildebeest lunged forward, muscles straining, legs scrambling for ground that wouldn’t hold.
The crocodile held low, its massive body half-submerged, using the river itself as weight. Every pull from the wildebeest met an equal, unyielding counterforce. The struggle became a brutal rhythm—forward, dragged back, forward again—each movement carving deeper chaos into the water.
Around them, the herd froze at the edges, watching, shifting, but never stepping in. The river had claimed its moment.
The wildebeest surged again, hooves kicking high, trying to break free of the invisible anchor beneath the surface. For a second, it gained distance—just a step—but the crocodile twisted, tightening its hold, pulling with ancient certainty.
The river swallowed the noise, the struggle narrowing into a single, relentless contest—one body trying to escape the pull, the other refusing to let the world move on.
