Switzerland’s rail system is one of the most integrated transport networks in the world, built to move through mountains rather than around them.
WHEN
We used it through early November, which is off-season autumn - a great time to travel, with quieter cabins, thinner crowds, and colourful views across the landscape. If you’re planning to ride specific scenic trains or routes at this time of year, it’s worth checking schedules ahead, as this period between peak seasons is when some mountain lines undergo routine maintenance. Overall though, the trains were calm, the views unobstructed, and everything ran smoothly and on time.
HOW
The Swiss are generally very content people, unless you mention the Swiss Rail Pass. As citizens and residents can’t buy them… and everyone wants one. It’s basically your “Golden Ticket” to Switzerland. Most routes connect directly with minimal transfers. Once you’re on the network, you can move between regions without complicated planning. Just enjoy.
