For their sophomore LP, the group decided to work with producer Hugh Jones (Echo & the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Bauhaus). The resulting album is more richly layered than their debut, fusing the band's atmospheric, affecting sound with a set of accessible yet invigorating songs. "So genuinely impassioned it is, that if they hadn't been a bunch of flag waving, preaching, ego maniacs then early U2 might have produced a record like From The Lion's Mouth; the earnest and powerful vocals, the haunting and nicely FX-ed guitar lines sending tingles down the spine, the spartan yet immensely propulsive rhythm section. But the difference is that Adrian Borland sounded like he was singing for his life, rather than simply singing for his increasingly over inflated ego." "It was almost like there were two Adrians that lived inside his head," says Dudley. "One was a bit scared of the other one". The Sound are arguably THE prototype post-punk band; A four-piece with a heavy emphasis on atmospheric guitar breaks, obligatory supporting keyboards (occasionally lush), and of course, the now familiar New Order-esque pounding bass.
