Juan Carlos “Juanchi” Granelli: la voz que sostuvo el tango desde la televisión popular
Ganador de los concursos de “Grandes Valores del Tango”, figura habitual de la televisión argentina de las décadas de 1980 y 1990 y cantor de fuerte raíz popular, Juan Carlos Granelli integró la generación que mantuvo viva la tradición tanguera cuando el género parecía haber perdido espacio en los grandes medios.
Nacido en la ciudad bonaerense de Rojas el 17 de octubre de 1950, Juan Carlos Granelli construyó una trayectoria artística marcada por el esfuerzo personal y la fidelidad al tango tradicional. Antes de alcanzar reconocimiento nacional trabajó en oficios diversos mientras estudiaba música y se presentaba como cantor en pequeños escenarios. Sus comienzos estuvieron ligados al folclore, aunque pronto encontró en el tango el lenguaje ideal para desarrollar una voz de acento dramático, recio fraseo y fuerte temperamento interpretativo. Su gran oportunidad llegó cuando el director Héctor Varela lo escuchó cantar y lo impulsó a presentarse en el concurso televisivo Grandes Valores del Tango, emitido por Canal 9, el histórico ciclo creado por Alejandro Romay que durante décadas funcionó como refugio artístico del género. Allí Granelli obtuvo notoriedad a fines de los años setenta, en una época particularmente difícil para la música ciudadana, dominada por los cambios culturales y la reducción de espacios para el tango en radio y televisión.

En las carreras de caballos, perder “por una cabeza” es la derrota más cruel de la pista: perder por la diferencia de un hocico en la línea de meta. El nombre del tango carga ese peso desde el título. Spielberg puso la melodía en la escena de apertura de La Lista de Schindler. James Cameron la usó en True Lies, y John Williams llegó a arreglar una versión para violín solo, dedicada a Itzhak Perlman. Aquí está sin ninguna película, desnuda, en una orquesta de cuerdas.

Le Pera escribió la letra, Gardel la cantó. Aquí, sin voz alguna, el tango se vuelve otra cosa: una conversación entre el violín solista y el resto de las cuerdas. Los contrabajos puntean pizzicatos, pellizcan las cuerdas con los dedos en lugar del arco, e imitan el sonido de las guitarras que tocaban el tango original. El violín solista carga la melodía que era la voz de Gardel. Escucha otra vez: cada frase que toca el violín es una línea que se cantaba. Cada pizzicato de los bajos es una guitarra que quedó atrás.

Quien está tocando es la Amsterdam Sinfonietta, orquesta holandesa de cuerdas que eligió no tener director. La concertino, Candida Thompson, dirige de pie, desde el violín, británica que vive en Ámsterdam desde 1992. Esta grabación se hizo en el Concertgebouw, templo de la música clásica europea, después de un concierto con el violinista Ray Chen. Por una cabeza fue el bis. Tocar un tango popular argentino como bis en el Concertgebouw es una declaración: la frontera entre el tango y la clásica es más fina de lo que se dice.

In horse racing, losing “by a head” is the cruelest defeat on the track: losing by the length of a horse’s nose at the finish line. The tango’s name carries that weight from the title onward. Spielberg placed the melody in the opening scene of Schindler’s List. James Cameron used it in True Lies, and John Williams went so far as to arrange a version for solo violin, dedicated to Itzhak Perlman. Here it stands without any film, bare, in a string orchestra.

Le Pera wrote the lyrics, Gardel sang them. Here, with no voice at all, the tango becomes something else: a conversation between the solo violin and the rest of the strings. The double basses pluck pizzicatos, fingering the strings instead of using the bow, and imitate the sound of the guitars that played the original tango. The solo violin carries the melody that once belonged to Gardel’s voice. Listen again: every phrase the violin plays is a line that used to be sung. Every pizzicato in the basses is a guitar left behind.

The orchestra you’re hearing is the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, a Dutch string ensemble that chose to play without a conductor. The lead violinist, Candida Thompson, directs the group standing, from her violin, a British player who has lived in Amsterdam since 1992. This recording was made at the Concertgebouw, a temple of European classical music, after a concert with violinist Ray Chen. Por una cabeza was the encore. Playing a popular Argentine tango as an encore at the Concertgebouw is a statement: the line between tango and classical is thinner than people say.
