HEPhotographer Rose-Lynn Fisher spent years collecting her own tears and studying them under a microscope in a project called The Topography of Tears.
What she found was striking: different types of tears can form different crystal-like patterns as they dry.
Scientists recognize three main types of tears:
• Basal tears – constantly keep the eyes lubricated.
• Reflex tears – triggered by irritants like smoke or onions.
• Emotional tears – produced during strong feelings like grief or joy.
Each type has a slightly different chemical composition, which can influence how the dried tears look under magnification.
Crying may also have physiological benefits. Some studies suggest it can help regulate stress and release emotional tension, showing that tears are not simply a sign of weakness.
Sometimes, the body has its own way of processing emotion.
