Settle this dispute. The craft (verb) or craft (noun) - which is more important in academia? 🎓📚 In January 2025 @lcflondon_ hosted the winter @technedtp Congress: ‘Techne for Living and Making’. A congress on Craft. This panel explored the role of making in research and how it materialises in practice based research. It aimed to disrupt the usual hierarchical structure of an academic panel by working collaboratively with the audience, ik order to embody their knowledge. It was a fascinating session facilitated by @daisybow_craft @steelandstitch @lwarnertreloar @shai_akram @rosebabyblues @msmonacr who are part of a craft research group. The congress theme the founding principles of the technē Doctoral Training Partnership the UAL curated congress reconsidered the notion of ‘technē’. technē, arises from the ancient Greek word to describe craftsmanship, craft or art, and was also applied to the human ability to realise intentions and organise actions through making, doing and performing. This congress critically explored imaginative practices of world-building, which contested previous understandings of “human” practices of crafting and cultural production, resituated the technē of diasporic and indigenous practices, and examined the critical debates in contemporary posthumanist theory in the context of creative processes. This video, narrated by Techne PhD student Daisy Bow du Toit, takes a look at one of the workshops from the winter Congress titled ‘Thinking Through Making’.
