As the fall hiking season approaches, public health officials are issuing a warning about the dangers of tick bites. Ticks can attach to the skin, feeding off blood for hours or even days without being felt. A telltale sign of a tick bite is a bullseye or redness around the area. "You need to get that off of your skin if it's burrowed into your skin within 24 hours," said Jeremy Hessel, Hamilton County Public Health Director of Environmental Health. "You have less chance of getting anything if there's disease in it." Hessel advised hikers and those spending time outdoors to check their skin and that of family members for ticks immediately. His team in Ohio has observed a significant increase in confirmed tick-related illnesses over the past decade, rising from double digits to more than 2,000 cases annually, reflecting a national trend. "They can spread Lyme disease, they can spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and some other diseases," Hessel said. The rise in tick-related illnesses is attributed to factors such as an increase in deer populations, which are primary hosts for ticks, and habitat expansion. Ticks have moved to higher altitudes, increasing human encounters. For prevention, protective products containing permethrin, DEET, picaridin, and oil of eucalyptus can be applied to skin and clothing. However, Hessel emphasized the importance of removing ticks promptly. "Making sure you get that tick out of your skin as soon as possible is key," said Hessel. Health officials recommend seeing a healthcare provider if a tick has been attached for several hours or longer, if it appears engorged, or if a rash or flu-like symptoms develop. Treatment for tick-borne illnesses may include antibiotics and antiparasitics, while some cases require symptom management.
