You keep thinking you need better shots to win more singles matches.
You don’t.
What actually changes matches are the small rules players break without even realizing. And no one really says these out loud.
1. If you miss the same shot twice, you don’t “try harder”, you change the pattern.
Missing crosscourt twice? Stop forcing it. Go higher, safer, or change direction. Smart players adjust fast. Stubborn players lose.
2. The score decides your risk, not your ego.
30–30, deuce, break point? That’s not the time to “prove” your forehand. Big moments means higher margins, not highlight shots.
3. If your legs slow down, your targets must get bigger.
You can’t play aggressive, low-margin tennis on tired feet. That’s how errors pile up. When movement drops, give yourself more net clearance and space.
4. You don’t beat your opponent, you outlast their bad decisions.
Most points at club and junior level end from mistakes, not winners. Your job isn’t to hit more amazing shots. It’s to stay solid long enough for them to break.
5. The player who controls tempo controls the match.
Rushing between points, playing too fast, swinging harder = emotional tennis. Slow yourself down. Breathe. Reset. That’s match control.
Singles isn’t about playing “better.”
It’s about playing smarter when things get tight.
