From Old Garment to New Thread: Textile Recycling Recycling used clothing into new yarn is a complex process aimed at reducing textile waste and creating sustainable materials. Main Process Steps: 1. Collection & Sorting: Garments are collected and manually sorted by material type (e.g., 100% cotton, wool, polyester) and color. 2. Pre-processing: Zippers, buttons, and other hard items are removed. Garments are shredded into small fibers (shoddy). 3. Fiber Processing: Shredded fibers are cleaned, carded (aligned), and sometimes blended with virgin fibers to strengthen the new yarn. 4. Spinning: The prepared fibers are spun into new yarn using traditional or modern spinning techniques (ring spinning, open-end). 5. Limitation: Mechanical recycling shortens fiber length, often limiting yarn quality to coarser products (insulation, stuffing, denim, carpets). Key Challenge & Future: Sorting mixed fabrics (poly-cotton blends) is difficult. Chemical recycling (dissolving fabrics to recover polymers) is an emerging technology for higher-quality regeneration. #TextileRecycling #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Fashion #EcoFriendly #Upcycling #Yarn #WasteReduction

textile recycling isn’t accessible rn 🥲 for my thesis “accessible low-tech manufacturing for commonly discarded apparel material” I asked a lot of hard questions about the textile industry. One big focus? figuring out what’s happening with textile recycling right here in my area. I partnered with a local recycler and learned that most current recycling solutions aren’t accessible to communities like ours. Textiles are piling up in landfills, industries relying on single or limited use fabrics don’t have sustainable answers, and local recyclers don’t have accesible infrastructure to keep up. Meanwhile, the impact just keeps growing. So, why does my thesis title matter? let’s break down how I got here: ✨ accessible: if the tools aren’t accessible to those who need them, then they aren’t productive solutions. ⚙️ low-tech: we need creative systems that are simple, affordable, and adaptable to the needs of our communities; not expensive complicated machinery that breaks and requires intense knowledge to maintain, repair, and operate. 🧵 manufacturing: a lot of discarded textiles could be reused and turned into something new—right here, locally. ♻️ commonly discarded apparel material: a lot of research and innovation is being done into new materials, mono materials, organic and natural fibers, but what about the commonly discarded materials that we have already made? #textilerecycling #sustainability #lowtechsolutions #accessiblemanufacturing #circulardesign #upcycling #localrecycling #zerowaste

85% of used clothes end up in the landfill, and on average US nationals throw away about 70 pounds of textiles each year 🤯 Secondhand clothes that don’t sell or go into textile recycling are often exported to developing countries. About 700,000 tons of used clothing gets shipped overseas each year. To help make your donated clothes will be sold at thrift stores, your items should not contain stains or holes. It is also better to donate clothes that are appropriate for the current weather, for example rain coats in the winter. Transforming denim waste into new materials♻️ In our mission to transform textile waste into innovate materials, we collect denim off-cuts from local fashion brands and businesses and recycle it using our custom-built shredding machine. The recycled fibres can be used to create PaperTex, by sending it to @tworiverspaper where it’s transformed into handmade paper, for bespoke swing tags, artist notebooks or business cards. Or the fibres can be used as luxury filling materials for interior products, like cushions, or for bespoke furniture, fixtures or design projects. We recently shredded this denim in-studio for a local maker through @renee_materials Book your first textile recycling collection with us today via our website and start transforming your textile waste into new materials! #recycledenim #textilerecycling #textilefibres #circularmaterials #circulareconomy

From the country where I come from, it is customary for us to “pass down” our old clothes to our younger siblings. Personally, I have an older (by 4 years) sister whose clothing I’ve been receiving. This is one way to recycle fabric. Businesses, especially those with a significant amount of textile waste, their best interest should be in textile scarp recycling. There are many textile recycling industries who recycle the small fabric scraps, which you can contact, in order to save the environment. There are some companies who recycle textile waste to make sustainable materials and handcrafted products. We can help you get in touch with them and provide you with the necessary links.
