From Old Garment to New Thread: Textile Recycling Recycling used clothing into new yarn is a complex process aimed at reducing textile waste and creating sustainable materials. Main Process Steps: 1. Collection & Sorting: Garments are collected and manually sorted by material type (e.g., 100% cotton, wool, polyester) and color. 2. Pre-processing: Zippers, buttons, and other hard items are removed. Garments are shredded into small fibers (shoddy). 3. Fiber Processing: Shredded fibers are cleaned, carded (aligned), and sometimes blended with virgin fibers to strengthen the new yarn. 4. Spinning: The prepared fibers are spun into new yarn using traditional or modern spinning techniques (ring spinning, open-end). 5. Limitation: Mechanical recycling shortens fiber length, often limiting yarn quality to coarser products (insulation, stuffing, denim, carpets). Key Challenge & Future: Sorting mixed fabrics (poly-cotton blends) is difficult.
