Happy Fourth of July! There are many patriotic country songs you might hear at parties or fireworks shows today, but despite its title, @DaveAlvinoriginal’s song “Fourth of July” is not one of them. Rather, “#FourthofJuly” is about a rocky period in a relationship. It began as a poem, “Fourth of July in the Dark,” which Alvin wrote about a time in his early twenties, before he, his brother, and two friends formed the roots rock band #TheBlasters in 1979. “[My then-girlfriend and I] were living in a little duplex apartment and both working day jobs, and I considered myself old and done at the age of twenty-one,” Alvin recalls. “I think any relationship in that kind of situation has its difficulties, where you're sort of transitioning from your youthful dreams into possible adult disappointments.” Alvin wrote the song “Fourth of July” in 1986, shortly after leaving the Blasters and joining the Los Angeles punk rock band X. The Blasters recorded the song but never released it, and #X included a version on their 1987 album, "See How We Are." That same year, Alvin cut the song for his first solo album, "Romeo’s Escape." A decade later, @RobertEarlKeen1 recorded “Fourth of July” for his "Picnic" album. “I used to think it was a song about a breakup,” Alvin says, “but over time I’ve come to see it as a song that . . . could be about breaking up or getting back together or reclaiming your independence from a relationship or a dead-end job or whatever you feel the song is about.” Alvin gave this performance of “Fourth of July” during an April 2023 program in the Museum’s Ford Theater. Spent the afternoon Monday hanging with my big brother Philip. I’m happy to report that, while his physical recovery is slow, he IS progressing steadily. His mental capabilities are still as sharp and fast as any Blasters song played live at The Starwood in 1981. Philip and I discussed/mourned a couple of lifelong friends who recently passed away, swapped some old tall tales from the wild days when old tall tales were new, and even made each other laugh out loud a few times. My brother has always been my biggest inspiration and I treasure every moment we can have together these days (even if we’re just joking and bitching about how bad daytime TV is). Speaking of moments I treasure, here is a fuzzy film of Philip, guitar whiz Rick Holmstrom, drummer Steve Mugalian, bassist Gregory Boaz, harmonicat Jack Rudy and me performing the Junior Parker/Harold Burrage blues classic Crying For My Baby at a 2013 benefit show for our old friend the late John ‘Juke’ Logan (that’s a life sized cardboard cut-out of Juke blowing harp between Jack and Gregory). I can’t believe that show was 10 years ago. Time can be so damn elastic. Anyway, Philip has been singing this tune since he was 15 and I promise it WILL NOT be another 10 years before he and I play it together again. -DA . #PhilAlvin #DaveAlvin #TheBlasters
