Morning meetings have become a staple in my classroom. To the point where new students coming into my class each year ask me if we are doing it! I’ve moved away from starting content right off the bat and focused on connecting and sharing instead. This is what it looks like: 1) Meet students at the door. This helps me connect with students right away and helps deter any behaviour in the hallways. 2) Students grab a snack to start their day. I know this is sometimes a controversial take, and many teachers prefer food to only be eaten during breaks. For me, a hungry student just means another barrier for their learning so I allow snacks throughout the day as long as they have asked and they clean up after themselves. 3) I check agendas and do attendance while students chat with one another or doodle. Whatever task it is, they must be at their own desks and keeping noise level appropriate. 4) We take a look at our monthly calendar and talk about what things are coming up. We also look at the daily schedule so they know exactly what to expect and there aren’t any surprises. 5) We do a check in to see how everyone is feeling and also open up the floor for students to share. This can be about a prompt or something as simple as what they did on the weekend. This is followed by a short SEL activity that I plan ahead of time. This can cover a variety of topics, for example: respect, belonging, kindness. 6) The best part of our mornings is our class game. This is usually a quick game that we can play with minimal materials. It’s a lot of fun and allows students to be engaged and a little silly. These games often involve teamwork, and they will promote some of the things that we’ve talked about in our SEL activities, such as kindness. Slow mornings have changed the game for me. It’s allowed me to connect with my students a lot better and helped me build a classroom culture that is more inclusive and positive. I can’t imagine starting my day any other way now.
