It is not uncommon to forget parts of painful experiences. The brain is designed to conserve energy. If something feels overwhelming or threatening, constantly replaying it would keep your nervous system activated. Instead, the brain may limit access to the memory so it does not have to keep reliving it. When trauma occurs, the amygdala activates to signal danger, and the brain prioritizes survival over detailed memory storage. Sometimes this leads to what is called Dissociative amnesia, where parts of an event become difficult or impossible to recall. This is not intentional. It is a protective response. Forgetting in this context is not denial. It is self preservation. Your brain is not malfunctioning. What we say to our children in their moments of despair becomes the voice they carry inside for life. When a child messes up… spills something, fails a test, lies, cries, breaks down… They are not just learning about the mistake. They are learning who they are in that moment. If they hear: ❌ “You always do this.” ❌ “Why are you like this?” ❌ “You never listen.” They don’t just hear correction. They hear: I am the problem. But when they hear: ✨ “It’s okay, let’s fix it together.” ✨ “You’re having a hard time, not being a bad child.” ✨ “Mistakes don’t make you unlovable.” They learn: 💛 I am safe even when I fail. 💛 I can try again. 💛 My emotions are allowed. This is the difference between reacting and responding. 🔹 Reacting comes from a dysregulated nervous system (raised voice, shame, threat, control) 🔹 Responding comes from a regulated nervous system (patience, boundaries, guidance, repair) Children don’t need perfect parents. They need regulated ones. Because a regulated adult teaches a child: “How to feel, not how to fear.” When we regulate ourselves: • we pause instead of explode • we teach instead of threaten • we guide instead of shame • we correct without crushing • we discipline without disconnecting And slowly, the child learns: ✨ emotions are safe ✨ mistakes are fixable ✨ love doesn’t disappear when I mess up This is how emotional safety is built. Not through rules alone, but through nervous system attunement. Your tone becomes their inner voice. Your response becomes their self-talk. Your calm becomes their nervous system blueprint. And after a while, you think, “This is just how I am.” But most of the time, it’s not who you are. It’s what you had to become to survive. Therapy helps you slow down and look at those parts of you with kindness instead of shame. When you understand your trauma, you stop fighting yourself. And when you stop fighting yourself, healing actually begins. Compassion is the key here. The more you understand your wounds, the less they control you. And slowly, you start responding instead of reacting. That’s when you realize, you were never broken. You were protecting yourself.
