MAWhen I got the buttons for Elsie, I was just hoping that she could tell me what she wanted to play. I was not expecting that two years later we would be having conversations about grief.

ELIn hindsight, rosemary and eucalyptus are both scents you can use as a deterrent for a cat. This is also not the first time she's complained about this particular candle and at the time I thought it was just because it was scented and too close to her bed, so I moved it next to the couch aka the snuggle place
The candle has now been retired.

MAWhen I work at the counter Elsie always wants to smell what I have. And then she's judgy.
I taught her the word YUCKY because she always wanted to smell my whisky. And I would let her know "it's yucky." Same with lemons or anything spicy.
It is still a harsh judgment.
And yes, I am aware that garlic is toxic to cats. I wouldn't let her eat it.

MAIn a minor miracle, Elsie apologized for swatting one of the foster kittens. For context, you need to know that one of the kittens is named "Bug" because that's what she often calls kittens. In this video, she talks about their chaos "big loud" and then says she's sorry that she hurt one of them.
She. Apologized.
A cat.
Apologized.
Please note, that did not prevent her from doing more swatting when they came back later. She's still a cat, after all.
Why are they allowed in the room if she's swatty? Because she likes having them in there for a little while and then the chaos pushes her over threshold. She will usually ask me to take them out but sometimes one gets too close to her and she sets VERY firm boundaries.

MAI'm reposting this video from last year, when I introduced a button for my nephew's name. She had appeared to give him the nickname "mouse" or used "friend" or "stranger." When I gave it to her, I thought that she probably wouldn't learn to use before he left.
Other folks said that their learners used names of absent people and that it was worth doing.
When you compare it with the video "Guppy Word" from this year, in which I introduce Elsie to a dog's name, her intentions with each response are vibrantly clear.

MAThis is an older video showing one of the other ways that Elsie will use "bug." One of the challenges that learners face is that they have limited vocabulary available to them so they will often make a single word mean multiple things, in the same way that "bank" can mean a vault or the edge of a river or be a verb.
You rely on context and body language to figure out which one they mean. So for Elsie "bug" means actual bugs, thrown kibble, and kittens.
If I needed her to clarify often which one she meant, then that would be a good candidate for adding a second button to differentiate. That's why she has "downstairs" and "outside" for instance.
This conversation is also a good example of what a toddler she is.
(Also, I was organizing my studio and had strewn things around the apartment. It's not usually this bad.)

PUThis one happened right before #hotdoggiesummer and it was super interesting to me for two reasons. One, the way Parker initially described the @milunova_pups squirrel toy, and the second was this was the first time she clearly showed me she understood the phrase “I don’t understand” as she immediately clarified both with words and body language (cause yes I’m also always interpreting that as part of her communication). That blew my mind as you can hear when I put it together how excited I get (and her excitement at getting the toy she wanted!)
