CHMyanmar (Burma) Traditional Thingyan New Year Water Festival is one of the oldest festivals in the world. According to the Burmese calendar, it is held annually in Tagu (April), marking the transition from the old year to the new year. Historians believe that the Thingyan Festival was celebrated as early as the 9th century AD during the Bagan era. During the Myanmar New Year festivals, people perform various traditional activities such as singing New Year Thingyan songs, dancing traditional Thingyan dances, and making and sharing traditional foods. Many also participate in religious acts to accumulate merit, including pouring water on Buddha statues, offering flowers and oil lamps, meditating, and paying respects to the elderly. In 2024, Myanmar Maha Atฤ Thingyan Festival was officially recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. MYMont Lone Yay Paw (Thingyan Festival Snack) ๐ก๐ก
Thingyan Festival, aka the Water Festival or New Year Festival, is a grand festival celebrated by the Myanmar people by splashing water on each other. Myanmar people believe that all negative things can be washed away by water to make a fresh start for the new year.
At Thingyan, Myanmar people also do good deeds by donating food, and Mont Lone Yay Paw is a famous snack available at food donation places. In addition, families and friends reunite on the holidays, and making Mont Lone Yay Paw together is a cherished tradition.
Mont Lone Yay Paw is made with a mix of sticky rice flour and rice flour, shaped into small balls with palm jaggery added inside and then boiled. They are best enjoyed with shredded coconut on top.
