The Thompson Elk Fountain, commonly known as the Elk Statue, is a historic bronze sculpture and fountain located in downtown Portland. Installed in 1900, it was donated by former Portland mayor David P. Thompson to commemorate the elk that once roamed the region. The statue, crafted by artist Roland Hinton Perry, stands approximately 9 feet tall and rests on a granite base within an octagonal basin.  Historically, the fountain was situated on Southwest Main Street, between Chapman Square and Lownsdale Square, serving as a notable landmark in the city’s Plaza Blocks.  During the 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd, the fountain sustained damage from fires set at its base. Consequently, the city removed the bronze elk statue in July 2020 for preservation and initiated plans for restoration.   As of December 2023, the Portland City Council authorized a $1.5 million budget to reinstall the Thompson Elk statue at its original location on Southwest Main Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues. The restoration project includes reconstructing the granite fountain base and implementing infrastructure improvements to enhance accessibility and resilience.
