What do I mean when I say that the forest is my co-author of Heartwood? That they are the genesis, the light-eaters, the sovereign marvels of nature. That through our conversations, our intimate time together, what is on the page is from them. Like Herman Hesse once wrote, an essential joy is to learn how to listen to trees. Heartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees is my way of listening to the forest and sharing that in human words. It publishes in just four days. Preorders are available now. So thank you to my co-authors, the Forest. Thank you to the trees 🌳

Heartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees publishes tomorrow! A book about healing, wholeness and homecoming. A love letter to the forest. 🌳 How can reconnecting with trees change us? In just about every way. Deep gratitude to @grandcentralpub @gcpbalance @folioliterary for helping me bring this into the world and cannot wait to be in conversation with you about it. My book comes out today. I almost can’t believe it. Ten years ago, I was 24 and about to begin the first class of my graduate program. The class was on forest ecology, and we had a guest lecturer come talk to us about how he thought the best way to save the endangered spotted owl was to shoot down barred owls. I never imagined that the twinge of discomfort and curiosity I felt as I listened to this man talk would someday grow to become a book. It’s taken a long time and a lot of work and heartbreak and joy to get here. And now that the book is finally published I am very proud and kind of scared, but mostly I am hoping that my book can help inspire a better way of living with the world and one another. At the end of the day, that’s why I wrote it. So here’s to the world we have been imagining. ❤️

Chapter Preview: Fire, Forests, and the Accidental Truth People laughed at “clean the forests.” But here’s the reality: We spent decades stopping fires— and accidentally made them more dangerous. Forests need fire. Not chaos—balance. We’ve known this for a long time. We just didn’t listen.

I am hesitant to recommend this book, but for our family’s use, I ultimately decided that the redeeming qualities outshine the areas with which we disagree. I encourage you to read this full review before grabbing the book for your family, and you may want to pre-read it before sharing it with your children. I plucked this book off the library shelf solely based on the illustrations. They are captivating, drawing in readers of all ages. And when I started reading it, I was overjoyed by the quality of the poetry. The alliteration bounces off your tongue beautifully. In addition to the poetry, the book has informational paragraphs regarding the various types of forests around the world, making it a good resource for homeschool or science classrooms. Nonetheless, this book has a clear “save the trees” agenda. It mentions that climate change has made wildfires worse and that human development has a negative impact on the Amazon. It shares about Julia Butterfly Hill living in a redwood to save it in the 1990s, and the book ends with a call to listen to the forests that “are shrinking / Silently shouting, / SAVE US.” We have the God-given responsibility to care for nature, but I know that some Christians might consider these messages humanistic. Additionally, there is a brief mention of evolution, claiming that bamboo grows for millions of years. Despite these parts, I like this book for its poetry, science, and illustrations. I believe that our duty as stewards of God’s creation is to have a protective dominion of the earth, and this book encourages that. If your family is strongly opposed to the ecological agenda, this probably is not the best book for you. But if you take a more temperate (pun intended) approach, you may be able to see the forest for the trees (pun intended again). Tomorrow, people will march for forests. If you’re one of them — you’re a forest legend in my eyes. For the past 15 years, I’ve been advocating for forests — here in Australia, and before that in the Pacific Northwest. Not always loudly. Not always visibly. But consistently by volunteering my professional skills. This video is part of a story that’s been building for a long time. I flew to Sydney, hired a car, and drove to meet Mr. Thompson — filming him in a nearby park to help share his voice. I flew home the same day, went straight to the NEFA forest action at Gibberagee State Forest that evening, and the next morning learned Forestry Corporation had ceased logging. That moment led me to create my first music video: #StandUp4Forests that I'll share later. Now, I’m revisiting this work and evolving it into something bigger: Become a Forest Legend Because real change is made by people who show up — again and again — often without recognition. If you’re marching, speaking up, protecting, documenting, or simply caring — you are part of that story. And if this work resonates with you, and you’d like to support me continuing to document and contribute to these efforts, you can do so here: 👉 ko-fi.com/jimmymaleckithebogconservationarea Every bit helps me keep doing this work. @bobbrownfoundation #BecomeAForestLegend #StandUp4Forests #WhoSpeaks4TheTrees #ForestAdvocacy #EnvironmentalStorytelling #NorthernRivers #ProtectOurForests #CommunityAction
