🇮🇹🤝🇺🇸 Italian Ambassador to the US Marco Peronaci on cultural diplomacy: Italy and the United States are rooted in the same shared values. The intertwining of historical and human events has brought about cross-fertilization in the arts, music, and cinema, producing profound and extraordinary results. From the architecture of the American Capital, with the Capitol, to the influence that American society has had on great Italian cinema, the reciprocal influences between our countries and cultures are countless. Contemporary art itself developed thanks to these contacts. An exemplary story is that of Fortunato Depero, an artist who, from Futurist Italy, arrived in New York, where he mingled with the American avant-garde before returning to his native land. An exhibition dedicated to Depero will open on September 9th here at the Embassy, alongside many other important cultural diplomacy initiatives that we will carry out thanks to the Italian consular network and Cultural Institutes. My first trip outside Washington will be – already next week – to Texas, where I will inaugurate the exhibition of Ancient Roman statues from the Torlonia Collection, in Fort Worth. The value of our roots on one hand, and contemporary artistic research on the other, shall be the two poles around which our efforts to highlight Italy in the United States will revolve.

Dinanzi al Mausoleo di Augusto, luogo di alto valore simbolico, questo progetto porterà all’esposizione di cinque opere della Collezione Torlonia, recentemente restaurate e si propone di restituire immagini rappresentative del sogno augusteo, il complesso programma ideato dal princeps toccando le più alte sfere della civiltà romana: la religione, la trasmissione e la legittimazione del potere, la letteratura, la poesia, le arti. L’esposizione quinquennale è inaugurata da rappresentazione del princeps secondo le sembianze di Giove sedente coperto in parte da un manto, con i tradizionali attributi: il globo sorretto nella mano destra e lo scettro originariamente sostenuto a sinistra. Collezione Torlonia, Augusto Seduto ©FondazioneTorlonia, PH Lorenzo De Masi In front of the Augustan Mausoleum, a site of great symbolic value, this project will lead to the display of five works from the Torlonia Collection, recently subjected to study and restoration, and sets out to offer imagery representative of the Augustan dream: the complex programme devised by the princeps, touching on the very highest spheres of Roman civilisation: religion, the transmission and legitimisation of power, literature, poetry and the arts.
