YE街を古くして観光客10倍 | 新潟県村上市

「街を変えたいなら、この汚いアーケードを外せ」と言われた。
こう語るのは新潟県村上市で、町屋再生プロジェクト会長として、まちづくりをする吉川さん。
15代目として塩引き鮭などを作る吉川さんのお店でも、外観を変えたところで人なんて来ないと感じていたそうです。
それでも当時全国町並み保存連盟の会長だった五十嵐さんに「必ず来るようになる。騙されたと思ってやれ」と背中を押され、決断しました。
一年後、店は新しくなったのではなく、むしろ古くなった。
売っているものは変わらないのに、来店客は3倍、5倍ではなく、10倍以上に。
建物を変える際に吉川さんが大事にしていることは、村上市に伝わる町屋の形にすること。
よその真似ではなく、村上らしい再生を進めました。
「街づくりに限らず物事を進めるには、口で説明するより、形にして示すことが大切」だと、吉川さんは語ります。

“If you want to change the town, remove this dirty arcade.”
This is how Yoshikawa, who leads community-based town planning as chairman of the Murakami Machiya Restoration Project in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, recalls the moment.
As the 15th-generation owner of a shop producing local specialties such as shiohiki-zake (salted salmon), Yoshikawa says he once believed that changing the exterior of a building would never bring people in.
Even so, encouraged by Igarashi, then chairman of the National Federation for the Preservation of Traditional Townscapes, who told him, “People will come. Just trust it and try,” he decided to move forward.
One year later, the shop was not renewed to look new, but instead made intentionally older.
The products remained the same, yet the number of visitors increased not threefold or fivefold, but more than ten times.
When altering buildings, Yoshikawa places importance on respecting the traditional machiya townhouse forms unique to Murakami City.
Rather than imitating other towns, he pursued a restoration rooted in Murakami’s own character.
He also says that in town planning, as in many things, it is more important to show through tangible form than to explain only with words.
